I would actually jump all over a $499 NetBook from Apple, even if it didn't come anywhere near those specs. Hell, even $799 for a superlight, superthin notebook would be fantastic. At those prices, a person can afford to have their desktop workhorse (say, a 20" or 24" iMac), and laptop for couch surfing or taking on the road for some light work. Although admittedly, my iPhone almost fills that gap already.
This is obviously bogus product speculation. What is not bogus is Apple's intention to produce a MacTouch that will have an integrated touch screen/ keyboard and resemble a large iPhone in form. It should offer the functionality of a proper Mac but provide the form factor that many people think the Air should have offered. I expect to see this announced in January.
What this thread makes me realize is that the Air's big failing is price. Produce a revised Air with a fully featured Montevina chipset and suddenly you have a very competitive machine. But sell it at less than $700 and you have a winner. Without a dramatic price drop i'm not sure the Air is viable long-term.

Then why the hell would anyone buy a MBA?

At $1799, the introduction of tacojohn's fabled NetBook wouldn't be the first time that question was posed
Too true.

Except that'd make the MBA pointless.
