Those terrified at the thought of a dismayed postman ringing the doorbell when no-one's at home can rest at ease now that Junecloud, the developer of the popular package tracking widget, Delivery Status, has just released Delivery Status Touch for the iPhone and iPod Touch ($1.99, App Store).

The app lets users track packages from FedEx, UPS, DHL, Royal Mail, as well as orders from popular online retailers such as Amazon.

Delivery Status also has the ability to pinpoint package locations on Google Maps, and a function to facilitate the exchange of tracking numbers between the desktop widget for OS X and the iPhone/iPod Touch app.

This app is very well-designed, and future versions will include an integrated browser.

It looks nice, but it's not something I really need. Is there more than entertainment value in keeping close tabs on where a package is all the time? It seems to cater to the kind of person that complains about a no-show on day 3 when the estimated transit time was 3-5 days.
