Apple on Wednesday seeded iPhone developers with the first beta of iPhone Software version 2.2, which arrived as build 5G26 alongside a new version of the iPhone SDK labeled build 9M2611.

Again, three separate builds of the new iPhone software were made available to developers: one for the original iPhone, one for the 3G iPhone, and one for the iPod touch.

"Use the iPhone SDK for iPhone OS 2.2 (build 9M2611) for development only," Apple said. "This new version should only be deployed on devices dedicated for iPhone OS 2.2 beta software development and cannot be used for developing iPhone OS 2.1 applications."

Apple did not list any significant changes delivered by the 2.2 release over the 2.1 release, and there's still no word on when background push notification features promised for September will surface.

The company is "running a bit late" on this feature, according to an email purported to have come from Steve Jobs saying: "We want to get it 100% right the first time."
