Mac OSX CDs won't boot on Beige G3

I am having trouble installing Jaguar of my Beige G3. I have 10.1 installed on it now however the 10.2 CD will not boot. I thought the problem was only limited to 10.2 however other versions of OS X cds will not boot. An OS9 cd will boot however. The CD drive is set to master, I zapped the pram and even reset the cuda switch. When I try to boot an OSX cd it boots into open firmware (classic happy mac) and then reboots to a black screen and then hangs. Any suggestions?

sounds like it may be a glitch in the cd or the burner. why do i think this some may ask.

My Beige G3 worked perfectly with my Jaguar discs.

I also have had a lot of trouble installing OS X on a beige G3. The only way I was able to do it on that machine was to install it on a different computer and switch the harddrive. If I put in the install CD and restart holding c, it just restarts over and over and over. I really want it on there and don't feel like playing musical hard drives again.

I actually had this problem with my G4 Dual 450. Nothing worked; finally had to install via firewire target disk mode.

Well I downloaded the x postfacto utility and I am able to boot however i get the message (in verbose mode) "still waiting for root device". I know this means that it is having trouble with the cd drive however I dont know how to fix it. The drive is set to master. any suggestions?

Maybe the cd drive went bad? Try getting anothre apple bootable cd drive... you did say that an X cd used to be able to boot right?

I would try to boot off the X cd on the G3 and nothing but a gray screen followed by a black screen followed by a restart. This cycle lasted until I got the disc out, then it was just black. I held option and restarted and it booted normally. The disc still boots on other computers.

You know what, its a more broad problem. I bought a Rev A Beige 266 G3 off ebay expecting OS X to nicely install, not. I switched the CDROM to master, followed a whole bunch of other bologny, still wouldn't boot. Infact, when I booted into OS 9, and stuck the OS X CD in...it came up, but browsing the CD was SLUGGISH as all hell. My copy of OS X was copied from an original CD, so I found that original CD and it booted fine, the same thing went for my copy of OS 9. the damn drive won't accept burned OS disks it turned out. So if you plan on using aburned CD< better try to find an original instead.

I swear, I dunno what all your problems are. My Beige G3 is about as non-standard is it gets. It was originally a rev a 266 av model, but now it has:

    * Development Model NewerTech G3 500 CPU (love those dip switches on the CPU!)

    * SCSI Ultra 2 Card & accompanying HDs

    * rev/c ROM card

    * Rage Orion 128 GPU

    * Firewire / USB combo PCI card

And I've had no problems with 6C115. I had problems with 6C106, but that's another story.

At any rate I'll be installing Jag Server soon. I'll report how that goes.

On an unrelated issue, has anyone installed Jag on a Umax S900 / S910?

I have a friend who is having a similar problem installing jaguar onto a beige G3 266. Whenever he goes to boot up from the install CD (either by restarting or doing a cold boot) he gets an error which says that the mac cannot select the CD drive as the startup drive.

Any further ideas on this or solutions? Thanks.

I should have added that there aren't any problems with the CDs themselves as they were used to install jaguar successfully on a G4 400.

If you're using burned CD's, that's your problem. I was installing 10.1 on a G3 300Mhz Wallstreet PowerBook with a burned 10.1 CD (the update CD hack) and it would not boot. I finally gave in and performed the 10.0 Install from the original CD and every update up to 10.1.5 without a problem (except the wasted time).

Wow, I'm so shappy to have found this thread!

In my case, I replaced the internal drive by a third party burner. No os X boot after that and my original drive is toasted

Did any of you replace your CD drive?

Is there a way to install from a partition?

All the times I unsuccessfully tried to install X on the G3 it was an origonal disc.

OK, but was it from a original DRIVE?

In the case that I was speaking of both the hard drive (4gig) and the CD drive (24x) were originals.

    Warning: I'm making stuff up.

    - Eons ago, if you replaced a Mac's CD-ROM, it was not possible to boot up with the new CD-ROM. Is this the original drive?

    - If it's the older drive, then some older CD-ROMs had problems with burned CDs, as their optics weren't compatible. (Burned CDs reflect less light.) Is this a burned CD that you're using?

    Just a couple of thoughts...

    My instructive adventure until now.

I replaced my original Matsushita 24X CD drive years ago (It was a crappy drive, and many beige users I have seen replaced it too)

On my LG CDR , OS 9 is bootable (original or copy) and X is not (original or copy).

A few days ago, I bought a used Goldstar 24X for a few bucks. It was for my old PC, but I tried it in my G3.

    It boots OS 9 and original 10.1. My 10.2 is a copy (hasn't received my 10.2 and can't wait anymore <g&gt .

I did boot at first, but stopped after a while... So I made a disk image and burned it a 2X speed (my burner won't support 1X).

    BOOTS! YES!

Now my conclusion: Not every drive boots X. A slow-burned copy or an original CD is recommended.

To continued, since my G3 falls asleep with installing.
