Issues with iPod 4G and iTunes 8

Recently I transfered my music library to an external hard drive and upgraded to iTunes 8.0. When I plugged my iPod 4G 20GB into my laptop to update my recent purchases, I got an error message saying "Attempting to copy to disk 'iPod' failed. The disk could not be read from or written to." This message occurred before and after I restored my iPod. Is there any way to fix this problem that does not involve moving my music library back to my laptop or am I doomed to upgrade my iPod (which I don't want to do until May).



BTW my laptop is running Mac OS X v.10.5.5.
