e-mail help/advice with Omniweb

Im trying to change over to OSX. Last week we subscribed to Earthlink cable via of AOL/TimeWarner cable. Very happy with it. In OS9 I use the IE which links nicely with Outlook Express for e-mail. (Earthlink provides some patch whereby you click on IE mail icon and it goes to Outlook and there is your mail).

But based on a recent thread here on OSX browsers I decided to use download Omniweb. I like it--attractive, logical, customizable. But where is the mail? Bear with me. I come from AOL where its all integrated. What do I do? Do I get an email "client" such as Entourage, Claris, Netscape, or Eudora? I don't want or need a robust e-mail program. Just the basics.

I came here for help because I have seen many people here are using Omniweb. Plus I'd like a recommendation as well as help. Thank you. I'll check back here since I cant get my email

(Actually I can by going to Webmail on my Earthlink homepage but I have to type in my e-mail address and password)

OS X has a free Mail program which works great.

Look in your Applications folder, drag it to your dock. You'll want it there for easy access. It's very simple, but I like it much better than Entourage or Eudora (and I've been used to a very robust and powerful Eudora for over four years now). It's very easy to use and set up. Then again, go to <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/mac/"; target="_blank">http://www.microsoft.com/mac/</a>; I think they have Outlook Express for Mac OS X in their downloads.

While I agree with those who recommend Omniweb as a great browser, I don't think Internet Explorer is terrible. I used Omniweb for a while and found myself going back to Explorer. I haven't uninstalled Omniweb yet, but I can't remember the last time I opened it. I think it's more a matter of what I'm used to (I stuck with Netscape Navigator 4.x through 2001 on my Windows Machine) than what's "the best."

Oh, and since it sounds like you might not be ready for this, open up your old Outlook Express program and look in your accounts (choose edit from the menu). Copy all the info onto paper (SMTP or outgoing mail server, incoming mail server, user name, etc.) You'll need to type that in in your Preferences in whatever you decide to use.

Also, if you right click (or CONTROL-click) on the toolbar of Internet Explorer and choose "customize" you can add a mail icon to your IE toolbar.

    Hope this helps.

    Alex.

Actually, Microsoft has not as of this point released an OS X version of Outlook Express.

I think your easiest and best bet will probably be Apple's Mail, especially in 10.2, with speed and stability improvements and a nice junk mail filter.

When you first install OS X, I'm pretty sure that Mail is automatically put in the Dock.

Thank you Neba...So I use the mail program Apple has included for mail? No wonder I couldnt figure out what to do with such an unintuitive name Well, yes, Ive seen the 'Mail' icon as I lurked around the OSX system but that was before I had broadband and just thought it was for the "Big Boys".

And you are right. It is so stunning. The interface is just like Omniweb, it seems. You customize the tool bar identically. And easily, I'll add.

Alexander, you were right to try to assist me in configuring the Mail settings. But somehow I had done it well enough that it got my mail. Ive been to the Earthlink site, message boards, help menus, etc. I still dont know what SMTP means but apparently I soaked up enough knowledge that was able to provide what they wanted.

Thank you both for your prompt and 'right-on' help. If I could burden you with another question:

Earthlink says they offer 8 email accounts with the broadband service. My son will be wanting his soon so he and his friends can liberally embellish their correspondence with profanities.

Anyway, our family will be using different browsers and even different OSs(OS9, OSX, and WinXP). Do we simply set up a new account in the various mail programs? And will Earthlink be able to tally the accounts and stop us at 8?
