Jaguar install (clean or upgrade)

I am very cautious about installing a new OS and had a question about backing up my files. I have backed up all my apps., utilities and documents but for some reason wasn't able to burn a CD of the library. I would like to do a clean install of Jaguar but am afraid that I will lose important info. Would an upgrade from 10.1.5 work as well? I really wanted to get rid of the unnecessary partitions (OS9,separate iTunes) that I created when I went with X. Any help for a nervous old guy?

well, your HOME folder is the one that has all your stuff... you may want to keep your partitions, might come in handy.

What I would do is, once you get into Jaguar bring over some of your old preferences for stuff. Like i had my Application Support Folder from 10.1.5 dragged from my back up into Jaguar.

Don't worry, i am installing it on my familes' (yes i do have the Family Five Fun Pack) computers.... I have done mine and my mom's...no problems with either....my mom's upgraded just beautifully!

    there is not much to worry about i think! <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" /> <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" />

I just finished installing 10.2. Total time was 25 minutes. CD#1 14 min and CD#2 11 min. I did NOT install any additional languages or the Cannon printer drivers.

    I also Downloaded and printed <a href="http://www.macworld.com/2002/10/features/install.html"; target="_blank">Clean Install</a>

    Hope this helps.

I upgraded. Only Epson drivers and no additional fonts or languages.

Went beautifully. Everything is definitely faster except the Help Center which is awful.

    Jaguar rocks.

I think it was Addison IIRC who said 10.2 is much slower if you only "Upgrade". The "Clean Install" is supposed to be quicker? Is that right/why would that be?

I did an UPGRADE install and am not all that happy!

Now that I have read this I think I will do myself a clean install! BTW with regards to install time it took AGES, like an hour + to get it installed on my TiBook 800Mhz

MacWorld has published the correct way to do it on their website from the upcoming October Issue.

Migrate to OS X 10.2 with a Clean Install

    DATELINE: October 2002 Issue

    By Dan Frakes

"Before you can enjoy the benefits of OS X 10.2, you first need to install it -- which may not be as easy as it sounds. Although you can update your existing OS X system to 10.2, you may encounter several problems (including crashing applications) after doing so.

To avoid this, we suggest using the installer's new Archive And Install option, which installs a complete version of 10.2 and saves everything from your previous OS X system. (Once you've chosen your destination volume for installation, click on the Options button, select Archive And Install, and then select Preserve Users And Network Settings.) The best part is, this option moves your Users folder -- retaining your accounts and settings -- as well as the contents of your Applications folder to the new system. There is still work to be done to get everything back to the way it was; however, we're here to help with the manual labor..."

Use the above link to read all about it.
