What I did is install it on a seperate petition, and then when I installed X on the first petition just dragged over the System Folder and the Applications folder into the X hard drive. I don't know if this is the best way to do this but it boots fine, and Startup Disk in System Prefrences recognized the system folder for classic in the X hard drive as a system disk so... it works.
When I did it, it was because I did a clean install of OS X. When I had done that, I thought about how I was going to get OS 9 back on there. Since I had just backed up everything, I just made a partition and did it that way.
wondering, did you check the option to install OS 9 Drivers? seems some people, including myself, after re-installing 10.1 had not checked this option, thus having no way of installing 9 after. required a complete reinstall of both. it would certainly be odd if this were not also applicable for 10.2.
The disk image trick is brilliant, and it's easy. I think it took less than 15 minutes to make an image and do a complete load of 9 onto the Disk Image.
As a benefit, if you REALLY need the space again, you can trash the image.
Badtz, I'm having the same friggin' problem as you! It's driving me nuts. Even if I have an original OS9 install CD, I cannot start up off of it. What the hell? I even reformated the drive (with os9 drivers) so that OSX isn't even present, and I still couldn't boot of the disc.
Does anyone know what the hell is going on here? BTW, this is on a dual usb ibook 500. <img src="confused.gif" border="0">
I just did a clean install of everything, and this time I installed 9 first and installed X over it. I didn't have, or ever have had, any problems with the OS 9 CD. I can't really think of too much, but I know someone whom can send towards this thread who *might* be able to help.

would i have to erase everthing?
However, an external hard drive or a seperate computer in target disk mode might work. well enough for you to install it and then copy it over.
...or you could add a second hard drive to your machine if it's a tower.
Boot in the OS 9 CD. Use the OS 9 Disk Image utility to create a disk image of 500MB or so. Then mount it and run the OS 9 installer.
Install to that disk image. Jag at least can work this way.
I keep the disk image in my home directory.

I'm unable to even get that option with the os9 cd?
i've tried option, hold c
neither work.......
????
I knew I should've installed os9 1st!
But now I've already customized my jaguar, and I would really rather not do all of that again.....
is there anyway to just drag the older systme folder and applications folder from a CD?
or take someone else's system/applications folder?
