Couple of .mac questions...

Not really OS X, well sort of... So I have a few days left, and was still playing with the idea of signing up... I never use virus scan, don't need backups and so on...

I was looking at the webmail and, am I dreaming or does it not even have a spell check option on it??

Perhaps I missed it, but if not, that really sucks!!

Also, does anyone know if you can forward your own domain name to your .mac homapage?? I just don't want to have to use that URL. Thanks in advance!!

If you use OmniWeb, the webmail will have spell-checking just like Mail.app.

I'm preety sure you can't forward your name to the .mac address. you can do <a href="http://www.hompage.com/username."; target="_blank">www.hompage.com/username.</a> I think. I have'nt used .mac since it came out. Please correct be if I'm wrong.

You can forward a domain name to any address you want. So, for example, I could make <a href="http://www.elephantitis.net/"; target="_blank">http://www.elephantitis.net</a>; point to <a href="http://homepage.mac.com/dearreid"; target="_blank">http://homepage.mac.com/dearreid</a>; if I wanted to. However, once someone followed that first link, the elephantitis.net in their address bar would change to the mac.com address. Some domain registry services also offer domain masking, which would essentially just cover up the true address (mac.com), with the masked address (elephantitis.net).

Now, neither of these solutions are ideal. What we'd really like to see is Apple hosting the domains for us. For $100 a year, and since they're already running DNS servers aiming people at our username accounts, you'd think they could offer that. Probably they just want the branding that comes from a mac.com address.

To set up a domain name with forwarding, you can go someplace like <a href="http://www.godaddy.com/"; target="_blank">Go Daddy</a>, who will register, host, and forward your domain name for $9/year or less. They also offer cheap web hosting packages, but if you're going to join .mac, that would be redundant.
