Apps with a generic icon

My Quake 3 app doesn't show its normal icon on the desktop. It's just a generic application icon. How can I make its icon back, without pasting an icon on it (doh!) ? Sometimes, other apps just present a generic icon too. Should I rebuilt the desktop in OS 9 ? Is there something similar in OS X ?

When I open the Q3 app package, there is an icon ressource inside, but it doesn't show on the desktop. I'm using OS X 10.2.1.

You could solve the problem by rebuilding the desktop in OS9. Or do this: Copy the file holding the Q3 icon to you Desktop (or whereever).

Download <a href="http://www.versiontracker.com/moreinfo.fcgi?id=13226&db=mac"; target="_blank">Pic2Icon, open the application and drop the file holding the icon in the well (you'll know what I mean when you open the application).

The file you dropped in the well of the application now has the icon "on itself". Just copy it and paste it on to your Q3 application.

How would rebuilding the desktop in OS 9 fix this problem? Maybe you misread the question or maybe I'm missing something.

I had this problem once after downloading a new point release. All I did was copy and paste the icon from an older version of Quake onto the new point release.

It sounds like your problem is different in that OS X just stopped displaying the icon? In that case, I think you can Show Package Contents and find an icon inside the Quake3.app package. Then do some cutting and pasting and this should work fine (you may have to open the icon file in an editor).

I did watched inside the Quake app (to me, this is like opening the stomach of someone to see what he was eating). I saw a file which looked like an icon ressource. Q3 is my only OS X app on my HD which doesn't show its icon. I pasted some icon on it, but I don't like much this "solution" (well, it's a "patched" solution !).

I also have a texture missing problem with some maps. I didn't had this problem before, in OS 9. I tried to recopy the pak files from the original CD, but no luck there. I hate to see black squares with white bars on them when I'm playing a level. It looks so much fake ! This is killing the afflicted map, because when I run in a nice map and suddenly enter a room with a missing texture, I realise that I'm playing a silly game and it isn't reality !
