Changing display.

How do I change the display to video out on my Macbook alum. unibody 13 inch? I have mini display to vga adapter from apple plus 3rd party vga to svideo/rca (either or). Is the a button that changes the display? Any help on using external display for this laptop would be helpful. Thanks
