Hypnotic puzzling on iPhone with Primrose

There is something about the puzzle game genre that invites enigmatic design, and Primrose ($2.99, App Store) is a prime example of this, with a simple, glowing and vibrant aesthetic that recalls the vector displays that were so popular in films involving anything computerized between the 1960s and the 1980s.

Primrose is based on the desktop game of the same name which you can download and play for free from the company site. In the game, you select squares in a grid, placing colored tiles about each other in such a way that groups of colors encapsulates other groups, clearing the board and awarding you points. These groups of colors can chain, creating ever higher scores while an electronic tone grows higher with every link in the chain. As the game progresses, more and more colors are added to the mix, adding either an extra level of challenge or ease depending on your viewpoint.

The game, alongside its enigmatic visuals and eerie and slightly brusque sound design, features an online scoreboard (with replays of each game included, impressively), a colorblind mode and instructions with animated examples.

The gameplay is catchy, and the app is built to high standards, certainly making it worth the $2.99 that the developers ask for.
