Space Invaders invades the App Store

Visually synonymous with videogaming, Space Invaders populated arcades in such a way that it has firmly rooted itself in the collective subconscious of gamers throughout the world. So it was only really a matter of time until an iPhone port of Space Invaders ($4.99, App Store) found its way to the iPhone and iPod Touch, both platforms that are increasingly hard to ignore for casual gaming.

Perhaps as testament to this being Taito's first dip into the murky waters of the App Store, this version of Space Invaders is nothing particularly new, with exactly the same mechanics and visuals of the original Space Invaders. The differences in this edition are the various screen modes the game has to offer, four different control methods, and some bonus material relating to the development of the original game.

The screen modes represent different versions of the arcade cabinets that Space Invaders was successively decorated with, from monochrome to colour, probably evoking some intense nostalgia from some players. The control schemes vary from tapping, to dragging, to the obligatory but largely novelty-like tilting control scheme.
