A Journaling File System is a disk format that keeps track of everything it writes to the disk. The purpose of this is so that if the drive loses power mid-write, the computer will know exactly where there is corrupted data and be able to remove it.
My definition is a bit oversimplified, of course. Anyone else want to go into more detail?
