No, IT hasn't been "hot" since the dot bomb. Is it a dead-end career? Any job is a dead-end job if you make it so. Likewise any job can be a stepping stone. Even help desk.
Averages won't mean much from an absolute standpoint. I suppose relative to eachother there might be significance.
Just looking at the US alone, wages and the cost of living differ dramatically across the country. A two million dollar house in the bay area will cost only 10 thousand in detroit.
