Anyone else find that using Gmail IMAP with Apple Mail is a pain?

It's a bit confusing, don't you think?

I know that I have to use the Gmail set of folders, not the Apple or MobileMe ones. I also know that you have to deselect all of Apple Mail's rules in order to allow Gmail's rules to take effect, i.e., spam, emptying trash, etc.

BUT . . .

There is no Gmail inbox in the Gmail folder set, just All Mail. And the only Gmail inbox is part of the Apple Mail inbox group. When I get a new mail, however, the icon badge in the Dock shows 2, one for the Gmail inbox in the Apple group, and once for the All Mail folder! Rather messy and confusing. Am I the only one that thinks so?

I'n thinking of using MailPlane and keeping the two clients separate.

EDIT:

So I found the instructions to make Apple Mail play nicely with Gmail:

Yeah, right. What is this, Windows??

Really, though, it's no one's fault. Gmail has a unique way of doing things and is meant to be viewed via its web interface (or through its Mobile App interface), and it's not really suited to be handled by Apple Mail.

Here's the most elegant solution. Seems far better than vanilla web interface, too:

It's not free, but it's a sweet app.

If you want to use an IMAP client, I would suggest AIM. I use it without issue with Apple Mail. If I write an email using the online program, AIM puts their little tag at the end, but not so if I use Mail. Gmail in general, is not that useful for me.
