Sound balance problems in os X

I am experiencing problems with sound balance.

Whenever I plug in earphones or headphones, the sound balance either tips to the left or the right and how much also differs.

I have to always adjust the balance manually in the sound prefpane.

This is a pain. Am I the only one experiencing these problems? Is this a bug?

My system: iBook 500/dvd

    this is a bug

I have experienced it many times on my TiBook

I don't know if apple knows about it tho...I mean i'm sure they do, but the thing is it is hard to reproduce... it just kinda happens randomly...

there have been a few threads about this... each time nobody could definitively say why and when it happened so it is a very hard bug to document...

    edit: typo

I noticed a strange noise from speakers other day after upgrading to 10.2.3.

Finally worked out was coming after accessing sound in sys prefs and would only go away after quitting sys pref.

am driving the speakers via imic output.

hear a few other noises too
