Why is it when you drag an internet link as opposed to an email link down into the dock it uses the @ symbol instead of some kind of web page symbol?

because the @ is the symbol most people associate with the web.

really, I would associate www or .com more closely than @.

    Is it just me then?

"www" and ".com" aren't symbols, though. "@" has the advantage of being associated with the internet, and doubling as an effective icon.

    Also, "@" connotes "address".

I see what you mean @ does make you think of address, but what about a more link orientated symbol then?

A link is an address. It's a URL (uniform resource locator) after all.

Instead of the @, the website's icon should be displayed in the dock.

and evem if it's a good looking icon, favicons can only be 16x16. Blowing that up to 128x128 would not look good no matter what. If a way could be found to incorporate a favicon at 16x16 into a larger standard icon (like the spring), that might have some merit.
