ipod touch & maps

Ok so... i was down in my parking lot with no wifi signal anywhere around and my maps came up with a blue dot and put it where i currently was? While i was driving.. the dot slowly kept up with me... but the map didnt load just the dot came.. and i was not once connected to the internet.. how is that possible?
