Apple should have kept it this way

Found this over at Ars.. in DP3 you could remove the extras.rsrc and it would be a OS 9 GUI like this one here

Apple wouldn't have to do SHIT to let users do this.. just remove the not being able to boot when the system looks for the Extras.rsrc. They changed it in DP4

    The buttons and the dock is.. but that was a early version. Even Aqua's first buttons and dock sucked.

    In addition, I believe Apple should [b]not/[b] have left in this ability. Apple == Aqua now. Eventually, it may be Apple == Silver (from the looks of TiBook, iPod). It's all about brand-recognition. Plus, developers would have to deal with making their apps look good in both Aqua AND Plantinum... something that is NOT very easy to do.



    BtW, what resolution is your monitor set to, Sinewave? You really should make these pictures links so they don't screw up the thread formatting (plus slow down low-bandwidth users).

    Apple silver would be cool. You know I booted into Aqua the other day. And I noticed I liked the way it was shaped. .I liked alot of the rounded edges.. I liked everything but the gel and stripes. I was thinking about doing a "silver" Aqua type theme.. like the color of Sosumi.. but the look of Aqua without the stripes are gel buttons. Who knows.



    And another thing.. if all applications got it's GUI's look and feel from the Extras rsrcs then it shouldn't be a problem with support of themes. Thing is this isn't the case. Not even with Apple :/

    It would've been really cool of Apple to develop a nice classic theme updated and make it an option, but Aqua is better looking. Apple is about a consistent UI, though, so I can see why they lock users into one look. It helps newfies.

    Exactly. What about apps that are colored to match Aqua? Or apps that have custom UI elements made to match Aqua? OmniWeb and Office v.X immediately come to mind. It's enough effort to make Graphite versions of these elements (not sure if Office does this) but then to support a third?



    Okay, enough for tonight... I'm off to watch the meteor shower

    Yeah all Apps are using some sort of Aqua rsrc built in. It really sucks. I thought people learned their lesson back in the OS 8/9 days. Apple should have stricter GUI rules. ANd Follow them too.

    I Dont really see why Apple has to force a GUI on us, If it is because of newbies then I find that very patronising. And If apps (so M$ Word X has customised the aqua graphics!-how typical 'lets take a standard and bugger it') cant use the built in GUI elements to create the GUI then I would say that Is tough shite on their part.



    I cant see any problems with Apple supporting Themes, if all the widget take up the same amount of space and behave in the same manner and developers write thier GUI's to Apple specs then what is the problem?



    Waiting for an OS9 Plug-in for OSX

    Themes are a pain cause you not only have to modify the system.. but a shitload of programs too.

    do any of you remember OS X DP1? Still old interface and had ripoff menus. Was pretty cool. Installed it a long time ago for sh!ts and giggles.

    The OS9 Graphite look is well known, it's instantly recognisable as macintosh when you see it in movies or on the TV etc, I would imagine that Apple will not want to introduce themes to replace Aqua until it too has achieved this kind of recognition.



    It's very important from a marketing point of view that people recognise a Mac is being used and since they went with the decision to change from the OS9 look, I guess they have to stick to their guns and make the most of it.



    In a sense I think the Aqua theme may have a short lifespan in it's present form, it's heavily tied in to the way the machines are designed (i.e the stripes which are presumably meant to reflect the plastic stripes on the machines) the Quicksilver G4's have already lost this plastic front panel. Is it possible Apple will start customising the GUI to more closely match hardware? If they introduce themes somewhere down the road and keep familiar elements the same, I guess this is a possibility.



    I think OSX is only half way there in terms of features isn't it? I love using it but there's so many things that I miss from OS9 that haven't been replaced in X. I imagine they will start sticking in extras by the time we get to X.5.
