WinSCP, aka Windows Secure Copy, is a free, open-source FTP client. Supporting both SFTP and SCP protocols (upshot: secure transfers), WinSCP is fast and lightweight while still supporting advanced features like remote text editing. When you open a plain text file, WinSCP can open the file in your text editor of choice. Every time you save the file, it transparently saves and uploads the changes to the remote server. Added bonus: a portable version is available. WinSCP's synchronized browsing feature is also worth a look.

I just installed Transmit. How long is the full version period?
I assume there is no trial period and I can just use the full version free of charge indefinitely?

Anyway, version 4 has had a major rewrite and is now hands down not only the best Mac FTP app but one of (if not the) best Mac apps full stop (that's period for North Americans). The price is very reasonable for such a quality piece of software so if you use FTP frequently it's well worth it. You can even use it as a substitute Finder with tabbed browsing, quick show hidden files button, cover flow etc etc. It's amazingly well done. The Panic guys know how to write a good Mac app.
I do wish they'd add support for HTTP folders via wget, but they said they didn't really want to do that right now, though they have had requests for it. If enough other people bug them maybe they'll feel like it's worth doing. So please do that because I'm sick of having to use wget through Terminal.
So if you can't usually get an SFTP client anyway, why is having SFTP such a big deal? I can understand why some people would want a client like Transmit, but wouldn't most be suited just as well with Fugu, which is free? Or is there something else I'm missing?

SFTP is used extensively when programming routers. It's used to securely transmit sensitive files containing things like SSN numbers, credit card numbers, account numbers, etc. where there is no database link between systems. Where I work it's required by credit card processors if you're doing any FTP'ing on your network.
Also, FTP has this nasty habit of sending your login/pass as plain text. SCP does not. So if yu don't want your webserver to get hacked, you might want to look at SCP...
They're all well and good for sharing large files with friends. Personally, I prefer MobileMe and iDisk, which has a great user interface, good integration other features and is copletely ad free. It's not free of course.
Where the market for FTP still exists is for people who frequently access files on large data servers, of which FTP (or SFTP) still seems to be the protocol of choice for serving large catalogues of data. GUI's like Transmit just make it a lot easier and quicker for people who aren't familiar with command-line ftp, which is probably the vast majority of Mac users.
I use FileZilla because it's free, as all the features I needs and is good enough for me. However If you are willing to pay $25 and want a nicer looking interface, then use Transmit.

One more vote for WinSCP. It's simple, has an intuitive interface, and just works.
