I really have a problem with everybody all of a sudden waking up and singling out Apple. It's not just electronics, but all products made in China and a lot of third world countries, that depend on overworked, underpaid, often underage labor. Apple did not create these conditions: that's how the market is, and if you want your cheap mass-produced crap, that's how they have to make it to remain competitive.

Indeed. I would expect that Apple does have close involvement with designing the production lines at Foxconn, but Wintek is a manufacturer of components that Apple buys. One would expect that Apple has no involvement in the manufacturing processes employed.

Please, oh please don't sign this petition. Lets stop all this nonsense. Apple is working with suppliers and is doing a very good job on making the working conditions as good as they can be. I don't believe any of these people on what they say is a horrible working environment. No one is forcing them to work at these plants. They are free to quit anytime they want.

Not is not very accurately portrayed....so to be accurate lets say you are ordering 25 million Big Macs then tell them specs and lots of requirements on quality control and the conditions of your factory to produce the 25 million Big Macs. The numbers are of course not accurate because I don't know how many iPads Foxconn makes for Apple. But its not the same as a random customer walking into a McDonalds and ordering a Big Mac...maybe never to return again.

Apple is paying for a service, not to baby-sit a contracting factories employees or their problems, have the employees petition the Chinese government, their problem, not Apples. I can't believe how many freeloaders feel Apple owes them something because they are successful. Apple makes huge profits making great products, they don't owe me money because they are successful. Worked sheet rocking, taping and floating over the summers which was an upgrade from roofing in the 100+ heat the summer before. If I got a living wage for those jobs no one who earns a wage to live on could afford fajitas, new papers, roofs or walls.
I learned that I needed to learn a skill that permitted air conditioning. Worked two jobs through school and got out with no debt.

Here is how it actually goes.
Apple puts out a spec to several manufacturers. In that spec they list out a lot of requirements on quality control and conditions for the factory that produces the product.
Those manufacturers then produce quotes that they send to Apple.
Apple looks at the quotes and chooses the manufacturer that they wish to go with (and just so many of you know it isn't always the cheapest that wins).
Then the manufacturer fulfills the contract.
The important thing to note here is that it is the MANUFACTURER which decides things like pay, hours, and conditions. All that Apple does is put out a bid for work and receives the goods. It is actually rather ridiculous that they should have to police their vendors to begin with, but that is the world that we live in today. Apple is not forcing Foxconn to produce these. Apple is not forcing Foxconn to treat their employees as they do. In fact, Apple could likely care less whether there even are employees. Maybe you all would be happier if Apple invested its $100 billion dollars to completely automate this production line and then there wouldn't be those long hours and "low" pay. Of course, there would also be half a million unemployed people starving to death, but hey you don't care about that do you?
