It seems like a low number to me. If Apple were to lose 100,000 potential customers, it would not matter a bit to them.

I really have a problem with everybody all of a sudden waking up and singling out Apple. It's not just electronics, but all products made in China and a lot of third world countries, that depend on overworked, underpaid, often underage labor. Apple did not create these conditions: that's how the market is, and if you want your cheap mass-produced crap, that's how they have to make it to remain competitive.

Putting the spotlight on Apple while all the competition gets away scot-free is blatantly unfair.

Indeed. I would expect that Apple does have close involvement with designing the production lines at Foxconn, but Wintek is a manufacturer of components that Apple buys. One would expect that Apple has no involvement in the manufacturing processes employed.

If they want 100,000 signatures then they could ask all the Playbook owners to sign the petition... oh, wait...

It's not your fault that he fell but it is your fault that he has low wages and poor living conditions¡

Please, oh please don't sign this petition. Lets stop all this nonsense. Apple is working with suppliers and is doing a very good job on making the working conditions as good as they can be. I don't believe any of these people on what they say is a horrible working environment. No one is forcing them to work at these plants. They are free to quit anytime they want.

The only petition that I'll sign is a petition which bans ignorant people from ever making any petitions. These deranged leftist activists are evil and stupid people. Their petition deserves to be pissed on.

I just took a real quick look at their website and It seems like they have a beef with a lot of companies and things, not just Apple. Well, fuck 'em. Most of their so-called causes listed on their site are completely moronic and offensive. Needless to say, I support none of them. I hope that the activists fail miserably in every single cause which they believe in.

In many cases, people literally are dying while making Apple products.

    Yeah right.

SumOfUs is a new world-wide movement for a better global economy.

What a bunch of losers and disgusting freaks. They can take their retarded and offensive political ideas and shove it where the sun don't shine

Not is not very accurately portrayed....so to be accurate lets say you are ordering 25 million Big Macs then tell them specs and lots of requirements on quality control and the conditions of your factory to produce the 25 million Big Macs. The numbers are of course not accurate because I don't know how many iPads Foxconn makes for Apple. But its not the same as a random customer walking into a McDonalds and ordering a Big Mac...maybe never to return again.

That's China's problem.... Apple is paying for a service, not to baby-sit a contracting factories employees or their problems, have the employees petition the Chinese government, their problem, not Apples. I can't believe how many freeloaders feel Apple owes them something because they are successful. Apple makes huge profits making great products, they don't owe me money because they are successful. Apple puts out contracts for bid, they agree on a price, Apple doesn't owe the Chinese factory workers a great living. Really ticks me off, socialist crap.

I have no problem with people signing petitions on anything. It's just not gonna work. Seriously, as long as customers (us) just want to pay a low price regardless of how products are being made, these petitions are useless and will go nowhere.

Yep. We should all stop buying big macs and iPhones. Then those people will all get jobs writing software or being patent lawyers.

Somebody really needs to inform these people that they DO NOT work for Apple. They work for Foxconn or, in this case, Wintek.

Seems to me that the best thing Apple could do at this point to shut all of these people up is to move all of their business out of China. Then give those 100,000 names to the 500,000 employees that would now be unemployed and worse off than before.

Get this through your heads. These workers are not slaves. They can quit and find a different job any time that they want. The simple fact is that the VAST majority of them want to work at Foxconn, and specifically the Apple production division, because it is the best around.

The sad part is that too many ignorant Westerners would cheer if Apple were to pull out of China and then feel good about putting all of those people in worse situations than they are in now.

Don't believe me? Look at the Chinese citizen's responses to this fiasco. They are almost universally to the affect of "sure we wish we had it easier, but Foxconn is great compared to everywhere else" or "if you really want to make a difference forget Apple and look at everyone else's production facilities".

Depending on the injury perhaps Apple should offer them free "bumpers". (OK, that joke likely bombed)

I worked in a pit barbecue at 15 years for just over $3 an hour. The kitchen was 100F in the winter. Had a paper route before that. Worked sheet rocking, taping and floating over the summers which was an upgrade from roofing in the 100+ heat the summer before. If I got a living wage for those jobs no one who earns a wage to live on could afford fajitas, new papers, roofs or walls.

I learned that I needed to learn a skill that permitted air conditioning. Worked two jobs through school and got out with no debt.

What seems really unfair to apple is that Apple has become the face of everything that is wrong with overseas labor practices. It's not fair.....

My lord, it is amazing how little people understand about manufacturing and the supply chain.

Here is how it actually goes.

Apple puts out a spec to several manufacturers. In that spec they list out a lot of requirements on quality control and conditions for the factory that produces the product.

Those manufacturers then produce quotes that they send to Apple.

Apple looks at the quotes and chooses the manufacturer that they wish to go with (and just so many of you know it isn't always the cheapest that wins).

Then the manufacturer fulfills the contract.

The important thing to note here is that it is the MANUFACTURER which decides things like pay, hours, and conditions. All that Apple does is put out a bid for work and receives the goods. It is actually rather ridiculous that they should have to police their vendors to begin with, but that is the world that we live in today. Apple is not forcing Foxconn to produce these. Apple is not forcing Foxconn to treat their employees as they do. In fact, Apple could likely care less whether there even are employees. Maybe you all would be happier if Apple invested its $100 billion dollars to completely automate this production line and then there wouldn't be those long hours and "low" pay. Of course, there would also be half a million unemployed people starving to death, but hey you don't care about that do you?
