With the introduction of OS X Yosemite, Notification Center moves beyond notifications aggregation to include a completely new interactive Today view borrowed from iOS, widgets and a refreshed user interface. Looking first at Notification Center's new look, the pull-out is no longer a "drawer" that shifts the entire desktop to the left when invoked, but instead produces a translucent pane that lays on top of icons and open apps, revealing a bit of color from what's...
At this week's Apple Event showing off the company's newest iPads and Macs, invited members of the media weren't directed around the back of Apple's Infinite Loop campus to the Town Hall door, as usual. They were greeted at the front door and led through the private campus courtyard. Open Apple + Shift The uncharacteristic media micro-tour of Apple's headquarters is part of a new experiment in dialing down the company's reputation for excessive, nearly paranoid-level...
Apple on Saturday launched a beta version of iCloud Photos for iCloud.com users, activating the photo and video storage and syncing service planned to officially roll out on Monday with the debut of iOS 8.1. With today's iCloud Photos beta release, it appears that Apple has also opened iCloud Photo Library access to all developers currently running the upcoming iOS 8.1 maintenance update on their devices. Prior to the iCloud Photos beta rollout, only a random sampling...
While a seemingly minor addition, Apple's inclusion of a so-called "Dark Mode" in OS X Yosemite, which basically flips the translucent menu bar and dock from light gray to black, answers the call of many longtime Mac users. The feature can be toggled on and off by visiting the General pane in System Preferences. As seen in the screenshot above, a new option titled "Use dark menu bar and Dock" appears just below the "Appearance" drop-down menu. Clicking on the button...
Vanity Fair on Friday posted to YouTube the full 25-minute video of an interview with Apple SVP of Design Jony Ive, who discussed a range of topics at the publication's New Establishment Summit, including his beginnings at Apple and "copycat" devices. The video was filmed during Ive's panel last week, which had the design guru sit down for a rare one-on-one interview with Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter. As previously reported, much of the talk revolved around Ive's...
The launch of OS X Yosemite has brought online Apple's new iCloud Drive, which not only automatically syncs data from Mac and iOS applications, but also for the first time allows Mac users to upload and organize any file types on their own. Apple's newly updated cross-platform storage service works similar to existing properties like Dropbox or Google Drive. Upon updating to Yosemite, users can store any type of file they wish in iCloud drive, as long as it's less than...
The team at iFixit recently completed a teardown of Apple's new iMac with 5K Retina display and found the all-in-one to be nearly identical to previous models, save for the ultra high-resolution screen. Source:iFixit Images of the teardown process were posted to iFixit's website on Friday, showing the internal components and overall construction of Apple's latest iMac are virtually the same as last year's revision. The one big change, as made obvious by the computer's...
In yesterday's keynote, Apple's software chief Craig Federighi joked about rumors of the new Apple Campus 2 being an actual spaceship capable of literally taking off. The project is, however, figuratively taking off, with incredible progress visible over just the last month, evident particularly in the parking structures now under construction. In early September, AppleInsider presented exclusive aerial shots of the construction project showing its iconic ring taking...
An early assessment of Apple's late-2014 Mac mini found that the headless desktop does not come with user-replaceable RAM, but does include user-serviceable hard drives. According to Mac mini-based datacenter Macminicolo, the Apple's latest mini model does not feature user-replaceable memory as it did in the previous version introduced in 2012. The firm's owner, Brian Stucki, posted his findings to Twitter and the company's blog on Friday. It is not yet clear why...
With OS X Yosemite, Apple introduced a host of useful features for creating and sending emails, including Mail Drop and Markup, which allows users to send messages up to 5GB in size and annotate attached files before sending. Mail Drop With Mail Drop, Apple introduces a way to skirt the usual email size limitations by first processing and storing large attachments in iCloud, then adding a link to download the files in the original message. In practice, iCloud is acting...
