Another poster who prefers to draw sweeping generalisations about another poster... I really do pity people like yourself who have to apologise and evangelise everything Apple does and every new product they release, without looking at the facts. /sighFor reference, I have had through my business/work, at one time or another, pretty much one of every model laptop Apple have made. I currently have *infront* of me... MBP 2.1ghz, MBP 1.83ghz, Powerbook G4, iBook G4 1ghz,...
Here in France, with the EU 'tax', the new Macbooks, and indeed Macbook Pros do *not* look like a good deal at all :/ For me, the Alu is a deal breaker, as it kills wireless reception, and overall, the specs in comparison to other brands are just not up to much for the price Apple consumers are expected to pay. I need a replacement machine for 2 Macbook Pros I have, both of which are on their last legs, and for the first time in 20+ years, I am now 90% sure they will...
Well, the machines have potential and appeal for sure, but no way am I buying one for the moment... in 1 year maybe. They finally get all the bugs out of the current architecture and how it relates to OS X etc, and they jump ship again to another chipset! Another round of Rev A madness...*sigh*
I will be *seriously* shocked if Apple firstly have invested in their own factory, it just makes very little financial sense at the moment in the face of the the current economic state of the world. Outsourcing is the way to go in terms of economies of scale, and limited economic liability... if demand drops off, you just contract your 3rd party to make fewer machines, you are not stuk with a huge factory, staff and raw materials doing nothing but taking up cash... Yes...
I hate to say it, but staff at Applestores know nothing in terms of what is coming up next. The store CSM (stock manager, there is usually one person in each store that has full SAP access, and deals with every item that goes through the store), may have an inkling as they control stock levels and see what is expected in terms of inventory for the next month or so, but the Mac Specialists and Geniuses know nothing.
Just looked at the pictures in this thread and I am absolutely *shocked*. From that I saw, Steve looked like he should be anywhere apart from on that stage. The last time I saw detailed pictures of a Keynote was in 2005/2006, and the contrast to now is just huge. I really don't want to say it, but at WWDC he reminded of my Dad when he was going through Chemo, and the months afterwards. Pale, fragile, gaunt, and really hugely thin (and he wasn't exactly fat in...
I am not sure of the MB/MBP distinction becoming blurred, but the fact that Apple has no dedicated graphics in the MB line is imho dreadful, as well as the fact there is no 'lower' 15 Inch laptop... 13 Inch MBP with a dedicated gfx setup? 13 Inch MB with a dedicated gx Setup? 15 Inch MBP with X3100 (or similar)? 15 Inch MB with X3100 (or similar)? Imho, all of the above should be catered for in an Apple Laptop lineup.
OS yes, no doubt OS X is superior by a long way. Build quality? Not for me (2 logic boards, 5 magsafe, LCD, warped case, paint of keyboard top case and keys etc), and as already said, aesthetically, my 2 work MBPs looks like a dog's dinner after 18 months of usage. Yes, I have been a devoted Mac user for 15+ years, but really, it doesn't stack up that well price/quality wise imho.
MBP weighs 5.4 pounds approx. Vostro 1500 weighs 6.33 Pounds approx. Less than a pound in it. Hardly need to go on the bench press machine to deal with the extra weight And regardless, it being 3/4 of one pound lighter justify it costing over 1100Euro more?
As I said before, in this thread, I too think it is time for a change in a lot of ways. I've bought and used most of the Apple Laptops for the last 15 years or so, and think that the current MBP's have got a stage where they feel stagnant. All my last 4 machines have effectively been the exact same casing with a few tweaks inside (I know I know, there has been extensive redesign of the internal space of the machine, I used to be a tech, but I am talking about other...
