Guys, You obviously know your stuff in app development and what you say is all valid. However, I'd prefer to raise the discussion from leaves to the forest. Leaves are important but one can easily loose track of the big picture. I think the iPod was a surprise for many people, me included. Apple got the leaves right but what was most important, was how it integrated into a forest. This is Apple's strength - a solutions company. I think most people don't care...
Some of you have raised good points so far. I know many smartphones do most or all of what the iPhone does but I think the iPhone has many tricks still up its sleeve. Anyway, at the heart of the matter, one could say a Windows PC does everything a Mac does. So too a Lexus does everything a Ford Escort does. Yet, we all know there is a big difference in implementation. I'm glad to see Apple in this fight and wish they would get into a few more, like the living room,...
I agree that the main potential of the iPhone is a couple years off and that it needs to fill a niche now. However, I also think you guys are right that is why Apple is promoting it not as a handheld computer but as a better smartphone. It fulfills a need now and has legs to grow. If my analysis is right, then we need to start thinking where this is all heading. I think Jobs has the best view of all this and am guessing he is putting his ducks in a row. However, we...
I know laptops will someday boot faster but they demand two hands on the keyboard and you have to sit down, or at least put the laptop on something for support. A handheld computer uses one hand to hold the device, and one hand to interact with it. Two vs. three points. Yet we only have two hands. This leads to big difference in usability. Also, try lugging around a laptop all day - and I mean carry it all day. Every ounce counts. Not to say laptops are bad,...
Although Apple calls their new device an iPhone, I think this is not truly what it is. First we had mainframes, then microcomputers, then personal computers, then laptops. Now we have handheld computers. Apple started it off with the Newton but lost the lead. Palm then took over. Then various smartphones and other PDAs. But none were a full blown computer and were a pain to use for anything more than a phone and a few notes, contacts, and schedules. Apple's...
I am surprised how few people know about WiMax. Or if they do, they aren't talking about it much. Currently WiFi is limited to 200 feet or less. WiMax will be like 20 miles. This is a huge difference and can't come fast enough. Also Intel is building it into all their future chips. MiMax should usher in a new era of always being able to be connected to the internet. What if Cingular is going to roll out WiMax so VoIP can work within 20 miles of every cell tower? ...
Ireland, I know you like the all in one - or should I say Apple likes the all in one - but I sure hope the screen is separate from the box. Anyway... Some of the people here have not read the other threads that talk about an Apple solution in the living room. A good mock up with all the details would go a long way to them understanding what an Apple solution would look like. Hope sombody delivers some good renders. For those did not read the other threads, many...
A TV from Apple is not that different from their 23" LCD monitor. So it would be an easy product to make. As for Apple introducing just a tv, of course that would be stupid. It is the box that goes with the tv. The point is the one box that connects to that tv and that one remote controls everything. Add a good speaker system and you have a simple solution for the masses that are confused by HDTV and Surround sound. I can't get over how many people I know that want...
Some good discussion on this thread. Althought the thread is officially about video games, what people need is not another game console but is a good living room solution - one box and one remote. However this solution will have to go head-to-head with the game consoles for this territory. Right now the game consoles are not the one box solution and won't be for a while. Apple has an opportunity to step in a deliver an elegant and complete solution. However, Apple...
I would love to see somebody do an actual latency analysis on this. What about direct connenct with an uncompressed signal over something akin to SDI? This would solve the latency compresion issues and network bandwidth issue. This could be done. Another solution is to have another box that does the processing that connects with one data cord. It could be like a Mac mini but higher powered and not need all the io. If somebody wants games they could add it fast and...
