The people who think that Apple will not do this, are forgetting that this is Tim Cook's Apple - not Steve Jobs' Apple. For a master at logistics, the best way to showcase his skills is to increase supply (and therefore marketshare), and lower prices, without impacting profit margins significantly.   Secondly, it is high time Apple made a serious attempt at marketshare. There is absolutely no point in having $100B in the bank, if Apple does not use that money to...
Apple has extremely strong momentum at the moment. No one can deny that fact. But there is still one major negative that literally no one on the street is talking about.   AT&T recently announced that they would unlock devices that are either off contract or where the Early Termination Fee has been paid. Because of this, the used iPhone market is now going to see a massive boost - you don't have to jailbreak the phone, and expose yourself to all the risks that...
The problem for Oracle is that the copyright case while extremely strong, is also quite weak in terms of actual damages. The copyright case itself is not going to hurt Google too much - most likely it will be a slap on the wrist of the developers involved, and some token compensation to Oracle at best. The actual code that was copied is not extremely significant - and it is debatable whether it is part of a shipping device any more. It might have been shipped in devices...
I hope Apple does not go 7.85" - and instead does 6.5". The difference between 7.85" and 9.7" is too small and there is a strong possibility that 7.85" could cannibalize the existing iPad. A 6.5" option would be clearly differentiated, and unlikely to cannibalize the existing iPad. At 6.5", the device would be positioned cleanly between the iPod Touch and iPad. There are multiple reasons why it makes sense to do a 6.5" screen. - Don't leave open any segment for the...
Could the new Apple HDTV be a projector?? Current LCD projectors use a max of 1080p resolution in a 3" panel. That works out about 600 dpi or so. With all the work apple has done producing retina iPhone and iPad, is it possible that they have worked with Sharp to create a panel with 2000 dpi resolution for 4K HD? A 4K panel coupled with real time pixel interpolation to up convert from HD to 4K might actually be the cheapest solution for ultra large screen TVs. I am...
Whether wholesale or agency, it is not the model that is at fault. Whether Apple or Amazon, they are just doing what is comfortable and better for them long term. Ultimately, Amazon benefits if they can get Wholesale pricing and volumes. What does wholesale pricing mean? Imagine a scenario where Amazon gets a book for $20 if they buy 100 books, $10 if they buy 1000 books and $7 if they sell a 100,000 books. Amazon shoots for selling 100,000 and prices books at $9.99 -...
The bigger and more powerful Apple gets, the more nervous it makes their former partners. We saw Google stab Apple in the back with Android - Now Intel is openly touting its Ultrabook initiative as a better alternative to the Mac Book Air. AT&T is lending a major hand to Nokia, MS and Windows Phone 7. IBM has sold Google patents that it can use to fight against Apple and Oracle. So far, it looks like all these moves have been unable to stop Apple, or even make a dent...
You know what the stupidest part of all this is? Just last year, RIM actually spent money buying up Nortel's losses from the Rockstar Consortium - in the hope that they could use those losses to reduce their Canadian Tax Liability. The way things are going, they might not have to worry about taxes in the near future! They would be happy to have a situation where they are required to pay taxes!
Every year, as Apple launches a new phone, it makes sense for a US customer to pay an ETF on his current phone, get it officially unlocked, and sell the phone for $400-$500 on eBay. That money would more than cover the ETF plus the $200 to buy the new phone. The prices of these used phones would shoot up, because these phones would now be attractive in markets like India and China. A new iPhone 4 with 8GB Flash is available in India for Rs 37,000/-, which is $720. Most...
This initiative of Apple could actually cement the iPad as a leader in the tablet space forever. Once Apple builds up critical mass in this ecosystem, it becomes self sustaining. More content providers would add value to iTunes U, rather than go with a new platform. Ecosystems like music, movies, etc are driven by commercial interests. So there is an incentive for a player like Amazon to build a competing ecosystem. But a free learning ecosystem does not make sense...
