Of all the things Apple has up its sleeve, iAd must be the most worrying for Google. In fact Google might not be so worried about rumors of MobileMe going free. Apple should find itself in 4th place this year. They would have beaten RIM already, except for the 2-for-1 promo by Verizon - but it is just a question of time before Apple go ahead of RIM and Sony-Ericcson. Amazing, when you consider that Apple did not sell a single phone just 3 years back!
Come June, your 1 year old 3GS can be updated to 4.0. Nothing stops phone manufacturers from updating their phones to the latest Android, except that they are too shortsighted to do so. They would rather create an incentive to buy a new phone, than allow updating old phones. I think it is amazing that the 2G iPhone is still current except for a couple of features. How many phones can claim this? Apple being slightly behind in software is a non-issue. As for hardware, yes...

Dont forget the following things - - Apple has to pay for Bandwidth, storage, etc., even on the Free Apps, where they make nothing - Apple only gets paid for the first download of a paid app - zilch for upgrades. - Credit Card companies would be eating up 2% of the payments. 2% seems small, but from Apple's perspective, 7% (2% of 30%) of the money they get goes to the Card processors. This is just a question of time. Google's purchase of AdMob currently gives it the ability to freeload on the AppStore. I dont think people realize how much Google benefits from AdMob - the thing is, AdMob actually makes more money from the AppStore than Apple does! Apple makes zero money off the free apps, which constitute most of the apps and downloads. It also makes zilch out of all the upgrades to already paid apps - but still has to bear the download and other bills....
This wont stop - just delay the inevitable. They say nothing can stop an idea whose time has come. In this case, it is just a question of time before all the parts of the equation fall in place, and Apple (or someone else) can offer an iTunes or NetFlix like business model for TV Shows. Amazon has a service called Amazon Remembers - where they keep track of what you bought, what you searched for, what others who bought/searched for the same things also bought, etc. They collect this information, use it to display other products that you might be interested in, have all your personal information - including your address, all the people you buy gifts for, what products/brands you are interested in, etc. They even have very good idea of your income level...
Exactly - the $85 covers the cost of the content, plus the cost of delivering it. Apple will sell you the content for $30, and you can use your existing internet pipes for delivery. This model is similar to the model used by Vonage to undercut Verizon. This TV subscription model has been in the works for quite some time, and this is not the first iteration of this model. What we see as $30 per month, is only the final cost to the consumer. Quite obviously, it will be tough for Apple to replace a cable TV bill costing $85 per month, with a $30 per month offering.
