Like certain sex acts, I read this thinking I might like it if it were done very, very well, despite only ever having experienced it being done very, very badly. The only thing worse than a computer that make no attempt to correctly anticipate one's needs is one that tries and guesses wrong. After all, if I wanted to be interrupted with a stupid question every 10 minutes, I'd either a) switch to Windows or b) go back to my ex.
Privacy? We might as well discuss the rights of the passenger pigeon. It's sad they're all dead, but we didn't give a damn about them while it was still possible to save them, and now that they're gone nothing we can do will bring them back. Dead dead dead. Gone gone gone. Got it? Me too. Now can we all stop whimpering about it? It's the same with our charmingly quaint notions about privacy, and the reasons are as clear as the situation is inevitable. ...
One sure sign of great design is that it's difficult to improve. Brilliant engineering can often be recognized by the way in which successive iterations become ever more subtle, because tiny, evolutionary changes are all that can be made without reducing the quality of the end result. Separated from its popular redefinition as a dominance game played by the ignorant via conspicuous consumption, taste is really nothing more than sensitivity… the capacity for subtle...
Will more staff help make iCloud good for something beyond consuming what passes for art during the trashy end of the nasty American empire? I need more ways to consume (note I do not say "listen to") what we now call music like I need more ways to eat fat.
If the previews are representative of the film, only the fact that Mr. Jobs is dead and beyond all pain leaves us free to laugh rather than cry. Then again, he'd surely appreciate the irony of being associated with a film genre that calls itself "fantasy" even as it castrates the imagination of any source material it touches. Still, I'm glad he's beyond knowing that his name has been attached to an insipid piece of uninspired, derivative, soft-core trash excreted by an...
Am I the only one who finds something fetishistic about the quality of attention paid to these products? Go to any rubber, leather, corset, bondage, or other sexual fetish site and note the resemblances. I'd like to see AppleInsider run a well designed survey of how many iPad owners masturbate with the device before displaying porn on it.
Not just yet… Apple is still working on acquiring patents for the shovel, digging, sweating, memorials, epitaphs, and grass. Also grief. In the future, we'll be charged royalties should we weep when confronting the way in which our entire species which knows "the price of everything and the value of nothing." Of course when Grief 2.0 causes intolerable pain but brings about no healing, the EULA will have made it clear that the product came with no warranty whatsoever,...
Here in America, you can patent someone else's genes and sue them for their children's unauthorized use of same, provided you're a corporation which sufficient budget. If you can afford to buy a six pack or three of Congressman, you can have any law you like, no matter how transparently stupid or hideously destructive. And - best of all - provided you have enough money, everyone will admire you for having done it. All it really takes is a culture which has accepted -...
Remind me to ask you about your personal responsibility when your car is stolen because its manufacturer just kinda sorta slipped up and keyed every vehicle in a run of five hundred thousand identically. Never mind… You're clearly a smart guy. I'm sure the first thing you do after buying a car is change the locks. It's time we stopped whimpering about our rights and understood that anyone who buys a software-based product without first becoming an engineer, then...
Here's yet another example of our misguided and utterly useless focus on the quaint notion of "privacy." Privacy, always of questionable value, is now as obsolete as whale-boned corsets, and like such lingerie, is at this late date appropriately of concern only to historians, antiquarians, and fetishists. What we should be talking about is ownership. We should be fighting to ensure that all data about an individual is legally that individual's property, that any...
