While you are at the request line, don't forget to ask for PCI Express or some similar high speed bus for a replacement to the current mix of PCI & AGP slots. And a bunch of them.
OK Frosty, I think you took off in the wrong direction without realizing it. Hardware is of no use without software. Software (programs) that accomplish something are the reason for the user to acquire the computer in the first place. The user does not actually care that much about the specifics of hardware as long as it does not get in the way of the software to be run. Yes, Apple sells the hardware for a handsome profit. It is, after all, quite overpriced. At...
Good points OCCAM. The most fundamental question is whether applications presently written for OS X could run on OSX/x86/Marklar without substantial effort by the software vendors. If a major effort were required, one would have to question whether the vendor would make the effort for a 3% market share company. The expense may not be justified. Many people insist that Apple is a hardware company. It is simply a business, the purpose of which is supposed to be to...
I can not comment on the SIIG card, but I have been using the ACARD RAID ATA133 card for a few months now. The installation was straight forward and without problems. I have had no difficulties that I am aware of with it. Mine is configured in RAID 0 (striped) with two 80 GB WD SE (8MB Cache) drives as my boot drive in Jaguar (10.2 through 10.2.4) on a Blue and White with G4/550 upgrade, DVR-105, Radeon Mac Edition and so on. I did not keep the benchmark test results,...
It'll also have a DMA engine and perhaps the DSP-like features that were talked about last year. We can hope for a direct AGP 8x port as well. Is this what you are refering to TO?[/QB]
___________________________________________ Did you know that the AGP 8X spec provides for a *second* AGP 8X slot? Interesting possibilities.
Multiple 970s? The 970 is a very slimmed down Power 4 intended for the desktop, if one is to believe press releases. By the time the 970 is implemented the Power 5 should be nearly ready. What will come of that? Slimmed down Power 5s might be available with single or dual cores as the process should be below 130 nm by that time which should free up a lot of space. Getting the logic board optimized to use NEW technology needs to be done or it may come to little benefit.
Originally posted by Nevyn: Apple has authorization from the shareholders to _double_ the number of shares in circulation. So nominally buying a controlling interest should cost something like $3B... but if someone started a hostile takeover they'd having to pay more like $6B (as the stock price keeps going up with a strong buyer). So it is a lot less appetizing than it seems on first blush.
Quite so Nevyn. Their authorization...
I have a RAID 0 (striped) array with OS X v10.2.3. Do you have any experience with defraging such an array?
Interestingly, the speculation is just beginning about an Apple merger (again). One of the Saudi Princes who owns a 5 % stake thinks Apple might be forced to do this. OTOH, if Apple's share price should fall appreciably it might even become a hostile takeover candidate by one or the other of the two basic takeover specialists. The first type takes over and breaks up the company selling off all or part of it for its component value, a bit like stripping a car for...
