  • Apple shakes up electric vehicle team, places Bob Mansfield in charge of 'Project Titan' - report

So basically they're starting all over again.

Anyone who believes an Apple car will see the light of day before 2021, if ever, is kidding themselves.

And by then the big auto makers will have an insurmountable lead.
Just as Nokia and Blackberry had insurmountable leads in cell phones.

  • On its 2nd anniversary, Apple Watch settling into role as fitness & notification wearable ...

I looked at one last week. The Apple store employee was touting the health feature of tracking pulse.
I told them my phone can also check my pulse. I then proceeded to show them how as they had no idea you could.
As the watch still needs to be paired to the phone - the only advantage of the watch is a little bit of convenience.

I could see it being handy for the fitness enthusiast who wants to monitor pulse while working out, (you have to be still for phone to work).
At this point in time thou, I still can't find a compelling reason to get one.
Anyone who is going to drop some serious cash on a watch for fashion isn't even going to consider a techy watch. They are going to get something mechanical that can be passed down to grandchildren. What's the shelf life of these watches? A couple years?

I think it would have to replace a phone to be compelling - and that tech is at least 10 years away.

The only advantage of a iPhone is a little bit of convenience. Being able to use ApplePay without taking my phone out of my pocket is a little bit of convenience. Being able to read and respond to text messages without taking my phone out of my pocket is a little bit of convenience. Being able to answer my iPhone when I left it in another room is a little bit of convenience. Being able to use "Hey Siri" to turn on/off lights in my home is a little bit of convenience. At some point all of the "little bit of convenience" adds up to a large amount of usefulness. I am 76 years old and fitness is not a major concern (but my doctor says it should be) but being able to do these other things is very nice.

  • Apple's 2020 iPhones expected to use 5nm 'A14' TSMC chips

I don’t understand why people in 2019 are buying $1100 iPhone XS Maxes ,where a larger iPad 10’ costs only $330.
Can people in the comment section help me understand?
I am 78 years old and my eyes and hands have difficulty with smaller screens that are harder to read and compressing icons into smaller space.

  • Editorial: How AirPods and Shortcuts shifted Apple's Siri story and blunted Amazon's Alexa...

I find Siri to be largely useless - I only use it to respond to texts while driving, and (literally) 90% of texts I try to send contain errors. I have an English accent, and it improves slightly if I fake an American accent, but it’s still garbage. If it can’t even get the simple stuff correct, I have no desire to try to use it for more complex activities. My echo on the other hand is phenomenally good at understanding me - I pretty much only use it for playing music, but it’s great. There is only one reason Siri isn’t dead, and that’s the size of the install base. In all other respects, Siri is far far behind, so much so that apple should be embarrassed, and whoever is in charge of that group should be fired.
So, you use Siri to keep you and others safe as you drive.  Siri, in a noisy car, misunderstands some of the words you say but you keep using it.  Echo on the other hand can do complex things, play a song.

I use Siri in my car via Car Play to listen to my text messages and respond, get directions to a destination, play music, answer and make phone calls.  My eyes stay on the road and my hands on the steering wheel.  And my vehicle is a pickup, not the quietest of environments.  My HomePod, iPad and Watch do most of these things while I am at home.

I admit that I have not tried Echo for anything so I can not compare them, only relate my experiences.

  • New EU rules would force Apple to open up iMessage

    This is daft.

Its liking saying to UPS, here is a fedex package, deliver it.
Not really. When you call me from the US, your phone company isn't delivering the call. It's my phone company.

    Same thing happens with SMS.

    Dame thing happens with email.

The DSA is basically looking for interoperability as an end goal.

Not exactly. Lowest common denominator service is available for messaging and it is SMS. Lowest common denominator service for telephone calls is available but higher quality calls with FaceTime Audio offers superior sound between Apple devices. If I want improved services then I can purchase the equipment that provides it. I don’t expect the cheapest auto to provide the best ride because it is on European roads.

  • Channel checks, sales data on HomePod likely as wrong as it was about Apple Watch in 2015

I wish that HomePod wasn't such a bad product. We just bought our 3rd one yesterday. I watched a Netflix movie on AppleTV, in stereo, while my wife listened to music in the bedroom. When it was time to go to sleep "Hey Siri, goodnight" turned out the lights. Such a loser product.

You would use all your data allocation is 1 hour under 5G. Apple need to become a carrier.
Why do you say that? If it takes you all month to use your data now, it will take you all month to use the same data on 5G. But each download will be faster - not more!

It seems this was an easily avoidable mistake. Did they not test these models, or did they just say “good enough” and shove them out the door?
And yes, 256 gigs is too small these days.
Mistake? Your needs are not the same as mine. For my use 256 gig is more than enough. But by your reasoning I should have to pay for useless excessive memory to make you happy. Apple makes a range of configurations available to allow customers to match their preferences/needs. I don’t think that’s a mistake.
