  • Just like its waterproofing, fire-proofing & security-proofing, Samsung's Galaxy S8 Siri-P...

I have a friend who works for Samsung here in Korea, he and others on the team are not so certain of bixby and like google better.
That is not good when you leave own team is not impressed.

  • Apple uses platform dominance to 'lock out' competition, says Elizabeth Warren

how is this unfair competition? wall street and other blogs/news sites continuously tell us how much apple is doomed/sucks/no innovation. clearly apple is still trying to overcome the barriers put in place by wall street and gang.

  • Apple confirms plans for first South Korean retail store in Seoul

That's quite a surprise. They way people talk it's as though S. Koreans want nothing to do with Apple iPhones because supposedly Samsung flagship smartphones are considered much superior with all their fancy features. I really hope Apple knows what it is doing. Is this considered a good move on Apple's part? It sure will be amusing to see if the Apple store stays packed with customers.
Apple is all over here. it is seen as a premium brand- over Samsung. I teach at a university in Seoul and most students have iPhones and about half have iPads or Macs to take notes (or pretend to take notes). Not too long ago there was a piece in the Korean Herald (I think it was there) where the author wrote why Koreans think that apple should be here. Many Koreans want it, as noted by all of the Willy's and Frisbee (which looks remarkably like an Apple Store) stores in Korea (authorised retailers).

  • Zuckerberg wants to 'inflict pain' on Apple for privacy changes

good luck with that. it is little more than an ad-ridden opinion column that scrolls. I am certain apple has 100 other things to think about.

  • Amazon Kindle versus iPhone XS Max: choosing the best e-book reader

I read 1,000 pages or more a week (I teach at a university and research is a never ending). I do not have a kindle because for me it would be one more device. also- I have to convert any epub I buy elsewhere into amazon format (impossible if I bought the book through apple), apple's books app will take ANY ePub regardless of where I purchased it from (I have not run into any problem so far).
I am Scottish so direct sunlight of any kind for more than 10 minutes could result in severe sunburn or death, therefore I have no use for the ability to read in direct sunlight (not knocking the feature though).
I have an iPhone, iPad, and MacBook Pro. I read on the train, I read in my office, I read at home. where I left off I can pick up instantly. I like the notes and highlighting better as well.

lastly, I know this is shallow, but as I paid for the books I want them to be just as I want them. so if I find a better cover on the internet, I just download that image and drag and drop that image onto the book in books.app on my laptop and now I have a more aesthetic image, in my opinion (on al my devices).  I could never find out how to do that for kindle other than using calibre.app and cracking into the book to make the change, making it not worth it.

  • Apple's Cook addresses App Store monopoly, Apple TV+ launch, iPhone 11 in interview

I wonder (and fully understand it is not a direct parallel) but could Mercedes-Benz be sued for not allowing another type of engine control computer management system in their automotive ecosystem or infotainment? if someone wanted to make their own and install it, why is Mercedes allowed to void all warranties (and making it near impossible to install that software anyways)? I would suppose because Mercedes is making sure that they are delivering a computer system in their cars that does the job correctly and quickly with an overall experience that customers would enjoy (even if they do not know how much of their car is controlled by computer management). I see apple the same way--they know exactly what is under the hood, they are making their systems work flawlessly so that users have an effortless and pleasurable experience.

Mercedes does not let anyone make software for their instrument clusters or infotainment system (not when I was working for them--last year in 2012). There are other cars to choose from, just like there are other phones. Mercedes is protecting their product and how people view their products by not letting in just any old software, same with apple. No one is forcing developers to write for apple.

I believe the more valid complaints are about the developers' fees and perhaps apple's 30% cut. But without apple making the developer's job easier with swift, and the app playground, and advertising and hosting the app on their servers, allowing users the ability to access that app with ease and a system to review it--it is hard to take all of that complaint seriously. How much did small app makers make before?

  • Next-gen Apple TV could output 120Hz video, beta code suggests

    1. How many existing programs (TV or movies) have already been recorded in 120 FPS so far? Couldn't be too many, since I could find only 3 doing a 3 minute web search.
    2. Have Apple's programs for Apple TV+ been (secretly?) recorded in 120 FPS?
    3. For countries with 100 Hz power limitations, would Apple TV be limited to 100 FPS there? (To match the TVs?)
    4. I've heard of some computer games that can do 120 FPS, but that requires special video cards. If this rumour is true, that the chip in the Apple TV can render at 120 Hz, does that imply that Apple's next M chips will have the ability to render at 120 FPS?
    5. I remember when Ted Turner wanted to colourize his back catalog of movies. He did some. It wasn't too will received. Will people want old non-120Hz shows to be 120-ized using similar technology? I would think that animated films could "remaster" their programs more easily than live action shows. Especially when the movie is generated from computer software. It wouldn't be too hard to get Pixar films re-rendered to 120 FPS.
