  • Ricky Gervais roasts Apple as Golden Globes snub 'The Morning Show'

Most of what he said was spot on. However Apple is probably the best player in the business for investigating abuses in its supply chain. Its not like the cheap Chinese android manufacturers care.

  • iPhone 13 Pro, iPhone 13 Pro Max launch with ProMotion & Super Retina XDR display

Most disappointing and underwhelming iPhone announcement in the history of Apple, yet the delusional Apple fanboys here will say that it was the most advanced and mindblowing announcement ever.
A quick search shows you said the same last year about the 12. Odd hobby.

And I've just notice something else.

If you have a like button, and no dislike button, then all that happens is that the trolls will get together and like each other. If you removed the dislike then you really should get rid of all the buttons.

As I've said, whether you're liked or disliked on a blog probably doesn't matter to normal people, so the only value it has is to help people sort through irrelevant posts.
your definition of trolls is, once again, any criticism of Apple.

I've been here since 2003, and have only ever used Apple products, and I occasionally am mildly critical of Apple. So I got about 100 dislikes ( compared to 200 likes) during that time. Recently I managed to pick up 4 funnys. I could post enthusiastically and be assured of 20 likes per post. Seems pointless though as it wouldnt be my opinion.

I think theres a general tendancy to "safe spaces" here, and across the internet, which is hostile to proper discussion, as it merely ends up in ghettoes.

  • Switchers still healthy market for Apple, account for 20 percent of quarterly iPhone sales...

Anyway, lets work it out to an approximation. As per the link below Apple's  installed base in Jan 2018 was 1.3B, an increase of 300M in 2 years:

We’ve achieved a significant milestone with our active installed base of devices reaching 1.3 billion in January. That’s an increase of 30% in just two years, which is a testament to the popularity of our products and the loyalty and satisfaction of our customers.

    (source
    http://www.idownloadblog.com/2018/02/01/apple-active-installed-devices-base-january-2018/

That increase was between Jan 2016 and Jan 2018. Not all of these are iPhones I suppose but as an approximation I am going to assume they are all iPhones for now.

    1) The installed base increased by 300M devices.

    2) However we know that about 427M iPhones were sold in the last 2 years.

    (source https://www.statista.com/statistics/276306/global-apple-iphone-sales-since-fiscal-year-2007/ )

    3) If the 427M devices were sold only to existing users, then the installed base would have increased by 0 users. If all of the 300M extra installed base were Android switchers then the number of Android switchers would be in the region three quarters of new sales which it isn't, per this report.

    4) Instead, the Android switchers accounted for ~85M of the 300M increase in the installed base ( 20% of 427M).

    5) As an approximation then, the rest of the increase of about 215M in the installed base is out of 400M sales must be be people who are getting a second hand device, for the first time.

This is approximate. From that figure for IPhones you need to subtract the increase in the installed base of the other devices. Except for the watch though, I don't think the rest of the devices add up to much of that increase. Apple doesnt break it down for watches, but it does for Macs.

You also need to take away defectors from the platform.

Nevertheless theres clearly a lot of people not retiring their phones but passing them on.

  • How to teach Siri to pronounce names correctly on your iPhone

This worked out in a much nicer and easier fashion for me. It just worked, however it was my name.

I said "you are pronouncing my name wrong" and it worked like magic.

  • M1 MacBook owners complain about easily cracked screens

Amazingly defensive comments here. Utterly weird. Almost a parody of what people think Apple users act like.

It's not like apple hasn't had screen issues before, and I have experienced that myself with a screen that just went dead. Apple fixed it out of warranty because it was their fault.

Isn't this a site for consumers? Apple isn't a political party, or a football team you always root for. Its a company that produces electronic devices and sometimes, because manufacturing is sometimes not perfect, things can go wrong. As consumers we should hope that Apple makes amends and fixes any issues as soon as possible. What I see here is sheepish fanboyism.

And before people who have been here a lot less time than I have start on he accusations of trolling, I have been here from 2003. I am posting on an M1 device, getting another one next week, and if I swivel around I can see my old intel MacBook Pro from 2018. There's about $5k worth of Apple devices in this room alone, with a HomePod and iPhone and AppleTV as well and more about the house. And I've been here since 2003, when the number of Mac Users in my country could fit into a hotel room,. Since my first Mac I have spent tens of thousands on Apple products.

But sometimes things go wrong, and sometimes Apple denies it.  Grow up and accept that.

In your preference: Let’s treat all people the same
And you get this left part of the picture. Do you really want this? Or you just throwing smart sounding parades out at us?
Do you really think that image has anything to do with Amazon getting preferential treatment here? Wouldnt Amazon in fact be the bigger guy getting the two boxes to stand on?

  • Apple unveils plans to ditch Intel chips in Macs for 'Apple Silicon'

    Peza said:
Well this was the best WEDC keynote they’ve ever done, probably the best use of that new theatre since it was built too.
I do like the new Apple Watch, iPhone and iPads features, even if they are ripped straight from Android..

But.. I think Apple could have just killed the Mac, they are asking a lot from development houses here. And when your total market share globally is in single digits, I’m not sure many will comply, most did it for Intel as that’s the platform PCs use anyway, so it was easy, but now asking them to make effectively two apps, one for PC’s and one for Macs and iPads and iPhones, I’m not so sure many will want to do that, or, you’ll end up with a severely less capable app from the iPhone running in your new Max with Apple silicone.
You have no idea what is going on. Developers don’t write code for the chip. They write code for the OS which provides an intermediate set of software libraries. And those libraries are  being updated to produce universal code for intel or Apple silicon.

So for most it’s a recompile. Craig said “a few days” but that’s the extreme. For the rest it’s less than a day.

Ios developers are not Mac developers in general, but this allows iPhone apps to run in a single window, with touch/click interfaces.

That’s not the best strategy though so some might move to catalyst which allows them to get a better look and feel on the Mac.

And there are more iPhone users than Mac users so this may encourage those to move over.

  • A tiny chip makes third party iPhone 13 screen repairs nearly impossible

Jesus AI, get the commenting system fixed on an iPhone. I can’t even edit the post above to put the cursor below the quoted text.

Anyway to respond that comment - as a consumer I want the easiest and cheapest way to fix my device as possible.

If anything sees me leave this ecosystem it would be Apples repair policy.

  • Another $1 million scam app surfaces amid App Store legal battles

Wow, the 1 star reviews are damming.

Was charged for app from a pop up. Could not find a way to contact and request refund. Had to contact apple and report it. Was told I would be refunded. Still waiting for the refund. Will be reporting them over and over again!

So it looks like a popup sends them to the App Store and somehow they are charged immediately. As in $99, and it can't be cancelled. I think that's not possible on the App Store itself but it can happen on dodgy websites.

Theres a dozen or so 1 start reviews from real people and then lots of 5 stars from obvious fakes. Apple really needs to up their game on fakes. At the very least make it a banning offence.

    Here it is:
