  • Small-town Wisconsin suffering under weight of Foxconn deal, with CEO headed to White Hous...

The problem for Foxconn, as I understand it, is that in order to make the large screen LCD displays that were planned for the Wisconsin facility, Corning was going to supply the glass by building a plant nearby.  Corning changed its mind and now the glass must come from overseas, which will make the LCD displays uneconomic.  Foxconn still plans to make conventional LCD screens at the Wisconsin facility, but that will be less manufacturing than originally planned.  They are currently trying to find some other manufacturing that they can do there to supplement the conventional screen production.

As for the residents of that area footing the bill for infrastructure improvements, Foxconn has agreed (and is obligated) to reimburse for those expenses at minimum, regardless of how many jobs eventually are created.

  • Elizabeth Warren confirms Apple is on her big tech breakup list

Actually, Warren's objections are to the way Microsoft used to run its software business back in the 1990s.  Remember the old adage that Microsoft software developers used to adopt:  DOS isn't done til Lotus won't run.  But I don't see any evidence of Apple using its software platform or its App Store to compete unfairly.

  • August 6, 1997 -- The day Apple and Microsoft made peace

I can't believe this article omitted the central reason MS made their deal with Apple.  DOJ was scrutinizing MS for monopoly violations, and if Apple (MS's chief competitor) went under, DOJ would have been all over MS and easily made its case.  Gates had to keep Apple in business at all costs and that was the ONLY reason he made the deal with Jobs.  How soon is history forgotten!

  • Premium-priced iPhone X, iPhone 8 propel Apple to $88.3B in revenue in its best quarter ev...

"Any Apple fan knew this was going to be the biggest quarter in their history, I’m glad all the rumours were false! Also good to see the iPad sales increase, and hopefully the same this year once the new Pros are released."

The rumor from the past week that iPhone unit sales would be lower than projected was in fact true.

MS Office is the best suite out there when it comes to productivity. There's a reason why it's the most used by far.
Reason #1: lack of options twenty years ago.
Reason #2: entrenchment in business environments.

Both reasons you cite are very true.  And I would add that since MS controlled the OS platform for most of the desktop computer industry, they also came to control the major apps that ran on it by sabotaging competing office suites.  Recall the motto of MS developers way back then: "DOS isn't done 'til Lotus won't run".  Somewhat like IBM's ubiquitous punchcard format several decades earlier, once MS Office became entrenched in the industry, it became almost impossible to dislodge it.
