  • Editorial: The future of Apple's Macintosh

A big reason for the decline in desktop sales is the lack of significantly higher speeds. The small linewidths and thermal issues are not improving as rapidly as was perceived not too long ago and the move to multiple processors is a bit harder for many consumers to use as a basis for expectations (as opposed to GHz). Of course, innovations and improvements in mobile computing arriving during this same era provided a double whammy, but a desktop will always be the fastest computer available and will always offer more options. If the processing speed doubles then I am pretty sure that desktop sales would rise sharply and desktops then could be designed by Apple to form the center of a home computing and entertainment environment. This is in addition to the professional market that would be simultaneously served. This idea might also enlarge the loyal user base as the inertia of a multiple-part environment with a MacPro nexus means replacing a portion that uses a different operating system might be difficult. Finally, phones and tablets are likely to become less attractive in terms of upgrades so that their higher margins will not go on forever. A move to a total environment could help alleviate this looming problem, but new and uniquely Apple products are needed. The Apple TV does not suffice and Apple should be making products for home security and for automated health monitoring. These are huge markets not being served in the way that the iPod and iPhone served their markets. Yet these are important to consumers and fit nicely into the total environment concept that only Apple can provide.
