Get yer 10.3.9 in Software Update...

Some highlights:

Stickies
Addresses an issue in which Stickies could unexpectedly quit when creating a new note.
Addresses an issue in which new Stickies are invisible.
Stickies windows can now be minimized (an issue with Mac OS X 10.3.4 through 10.3.8).

Safari
Accessing certain websites, such as msnbc.com, mail.yahoo.com, ticketmaster.com, and others, no longer displays a "bad server response" alert that could occur in Safari.
Addresses an issue in which "safe downloads" files are not automatically opened after downloading.
SSL webpages (pages with URLs that start with "https://") load faster in Safari.
Adds some important Verisign root certificates to Safari, allowing you to connect to certain secure websites that you might not have been able to surf before.
Adds other trusted root certificates to Safari, such as VISA and RSA.

Finder
Addresses an issue in which copied files could become fragmented (but still usable) when you copy more than one file at the same time in the Finder.
Addresses a rare issue in which a file could become damaged when copying to a FAT16- or FAT32-formatted volume.
Improves reliability when mounting (making available) a disk image that's larger than 4.7 GB.

More
Addresses slow vertical tracking and intermittent trackpad behavior on PowerBook G4 12-inch 1.5GHz, 15-inch 1.67/1.5GHz, and 17-inch 1.67GHz computers.
Adds an "Apple Internal 56k Modem (v.32)" modem choice that you can use if you have difficulty using Verizon's Airfone Jet Connect service.
Addresses an issue with Mac OS X 10.3.6 and later in which the Calculator window won't appear if the Speak Button Pressed or Speak Total options are enabled.
Fixes an issue at the login window, where clicking the small space just below the bottom user account picture would produce this alert:
"Internal Error *** -[NSCF Array objectAtIndex:]: index(-1) beyond bounds (X)" (where X is the number of user accounts shown).
Addresses an issue in which the startup time in Mac OS X 10.3.6 through 10.3.8 may be extended if a large number of PostScript fonts are installed.
If your PowerBook G4 sometimes wakes up with a kernel panic, installing this update may help.
Addresses a data loss issue that could occur when syncing your iDisk at the same time that .Mac servers are experiencing heavy usage.
Avoids a potential Mail issue if the application is running when Daylight Savings Time changes.
Addresses some formatting issues that could occur when replying to HTML messages in Mail.

Awesome. Thanks!

btw, according to a reader report on XLR8yourmac.com, the latest version of Pozytron's AcidSearch crashes Safari on startup after the update. I think I'll hold off on installing it until a fix is posted.

well, Safari in 10.3.9 will not load pith helmet, I am sure I just need an update to pith r something, as I stopped using the Safari browser 5 hrs after taking my Mac out of the box - I use Fire fox because I find that it renders far faster, but I am giving Safari a second chance (and a 3rd once tiger rolls out).

EDIT: HOLY CRAP this is fast! safari is rendering faster than anything I have seen...wowsa...

SSL web-pages are definitely loading faster for me.

In fact, everything in Safari seems snappier, but that may just be my imagination.

SSL pages are definitely quite a bit better though.

If Java is important to you, I'd skip 10.3.9. I can't run any Java programs, and any site that I navigate to with an applet on it crashes my browser. Others have reported the same issue. Maybe some of the other early adopters can confirm.

Installed the combo update on my G5 1.8 with no problems. I repaired permissions, rebooted, installed the update, rebooted, now repairing permissions again as I type this.

Safari DOES seem faster!

The Safari update is much bigger and better than the Software Update description would have you believe. It's a major enhancement.

OSX 10.3.9 includes an update to Safari v1.3 which uses the same updated Web and Javascript cores as Safari 2.0. There's a whole load of fixes in the rendering of pages. Plus loads of extra features like support for min/max height in CSS and contentEditable is now supported so that opens up the possibility of wysiwyg page editors. Undo in textareas now works. Form completion is faster - I used to switch it off on my G3. Page reloads aren't as frequent and switching from one page to the next and back doesn't create a whole page update.

Go read...

http://weblogs.mozillazine.org/hyatt/

Dave is claiming page speedups of 35% in a specific benchmark and I've had javascript speedups of 400%. In general use I think it's a lot faster than 35% gain.

The Java problem is only affecting some users. It can be fixed by either re-installing the last security update or running prebinding.

I'm so happy with the Safari update and so glad Apple has put the 2.0 engine into Panther otherwise it'd mean us web design chaps having to support yet another browser.

Well, that was short lived - Mozilla is now ar 1.0.3 and it renders as fast as the new safari and ad block is free - pith helmet isn't and it doesnt work on the new safari yet, so looks like safari loses this round.

I've seen on a file download that it shows the speed. It never used to do that did it? It's one little thing I've wanted for a while now! Seems pretty darn fast though

Javascript and flash performance are now significantly faster on Safari 1.3 than Firefox 1.0.3. Quite a welcome improvement.

I don't know if it's been answered here before, but to what Macs do "PowerMac7_2", "PowerMac8_1", and "PowerMac9_1" refer to?

And what about "SMU_Neo2"?

Apple releases Mac OS X 10.3.9

Apple on Friday evening released Mac OS X 10.3.9, likely the final update to its Mac OS X 10.3 "Panther" operating system. According to Apple, the 10.3.9 Update, recommended for all users, delivers overall improved compatibility and reliability for Mac OS X v10.3 "Panther", including improvements to file sharing and directory services reliability for mixed Mac and PC networks; Mail, Safari and Stickies application reliability; compatibility for third-party applications and devices; and previous standalone security updates. It is available via the Software Update Control Panel.

Just ran some benchmarks on an iMac G5 1.8 - Power set to Highest Performance.

Javascript - http://www.24fun.com/downloadcenter/...s/benchjs.html

Safari 1.3 - 13.29 seconds
Firefox 1.03 - 27.2 seconds (flickery in places)
IE 5.23 - 54.21 seconds (mostly it was just slow at string manipulation, not display)

If I find some decent CSS and (X)HTML benchmarks I'll give them a try but javascript performance rocks!

HOLY SHIT -- I got that JavaScript benchmark down from 310s to 38s!! That's 815% improvement! Add to that the full DOM2 - now I can finally access all sections of my bank's online banking!

Check Hyatt's blog (link in post above) -- Safari 1.3 is smoking!

Don't know if this is new or not with 1.3.

Clicked on an url. A message came up with Safari that the url had a space included which shouldn't be there. Then it opened the page. New feature?

What is also interesting about the Hyatt Blog is that he talks about things in Tiger that will make Safari 2 even faster than 1.3! Good news.

Snow Leopard is awesome on my 13" MacBook Pro.

Hm, I get 9.4s in Safari, 13s in Camino 0.8, on a DP1.25GHz G4 (11.2s on Safari if I disable a processor). Something the matter with your G5?

Now if I had an adblock for Safari, I'd actually use it.

edit: usercontent.css works in Safari, yay

I'm very impressed with the new Safari after having run Firefox for the past few months... just waiting for an updated version of PithHelmet and I might make it my primary browser again.

For those on the fence, I would definitely recommend 10.3.9 just for these updates.

Things I have noticed after installing 10.3.9

I definitely agree that Safari is much faster but am I the only one who has noticed it plays gifs like at double the speed they are supposed to be? Gifs also seem to take a lot of processor power.

Find a page of animated gifs and everything will look hi-speed.

Also the Genie effect seems different, I don't know if its smother or faster, it just seem slicker.

You may have a faster graphics card than the fx5200 Ultra in the iMac.

A Radeon 9000 isn't that much faster, is it?

There's a workaround posted on macupdate:

+ Find the "PithHelmet.bundle" file -- probably in /Library/Application Support/SIMBL/Plugins
+ ctrl-click on the "PithHelmet.bundle" file, and select "Show Package Contents"
+ Inside the "Contents" folder, double-click the "Info.plist" file. It should launch the "Property List Editor" app.
+ Expand "Root", then expand "SIMBLTargetApplications", then expand "0".
+ Double-click the number ABOVE 125 (MaxBundleVersion) and change it to 312.
+ Save and quit the editor.
+ Relaunch Safari -- done!

I agree. I haven't been playing around with my Mac since 10.3.9, but minimizing happens more quickly and it's more fluid. I didn't think I could be happier with the genie effect.

Also something that got me on <10.3.8 is that typing in a text box (the ones you type your replies to threads in) in Safari seemed to hesitate and always play catch up. Now it's right then when I type rather than those few milliseconds it took before.

SOOOOO all these little speed boosts have got us talking:
"Wow it's so much faster... Imagine this is only a point update and people say Tiger is even faster/more fluid... I must by Tiger now."

Very nice ploy on Apple's part.

The current Power Mac is not PowerMac 9,1. There has been some debate on what this actually represents...it's a G5 of some sort, however, I don't think it's directly attributable to the SP G5 1.8 as some have suggested.

I scored 8.3 in Safari on my imac g5... he must need a restart or something.

No. In theory the fx5200 is about 30% faster than the 9000 so I don't know what's going on there. Maybe this test is just something the G4 does better than the G5? Perhaps it can optimise the loops better on the G4.

In any case, it's still a load faster than it was before, and faster than Firefox too.

Possibly. I'll try after a reboot.

Possibly I've got something else running in the background taking up CPU time I'm not aware of.

Ugh.

They changed the view source key command to command+option+U

That's utterly retarded.
