MacOS X UPDATE 10.4.3 IS OUT !
It's finally out ! I'm updating in few minutes.
I'm crossing my fingers, with all the video card drivers nasty problems I'm experiencing since two months.
G5 Dual 2.0 GHz,
160 GB HD + 250 GB HD, 4 GB RAM, ATI X850 XT video card OS X Tiger 10.4.9 Apple 20" LCD |

After repairing permissions, Exposé and Spotlight are quite noticeably faster and more responsive on my 17" 1Ghz PB G4 with 512MB of ram.

this update will be my last effort at getting my home linksys airport network rolling correctly under tiger (long story...). if it still doesn't work, i'm just dropping cat5 down from the ceiling.

I can change the teeny-tiny, itty-bitty, way-too-small font in the Mail folders now. R0x0rz AppuL! It also failed to destroy my GPG and Mail Act-On extensions, which still work. Shocked I am, aghast, amazed, and very surprised! And iTunes is tEh snaPpY again! For those keeping score, iTunes has seriously lacked, uhm, anything approaching speed and beachballed 2 deth since 5.0. Gonna party like it's 4.X again. Average visualizations frame rate is back up to 30fps where I've capped it, instead of limping along at 12-17fps, which is the pathetic speed it's been going at since 5.X + Also, iTunes no longer mangles video. It Just Works! Hooray! I admit, deep down inside, I was hurt and emotionally scarred when my music started to grind to a halt. I mean, I fill up my PowerBook with 2GB, I have my tunes on a FireWire 800 drive going at 7200RPM and *THAT* was how Apple thanked me? Bad Steve, bad, bad, bad Steve. More super-exciting discoveries as I make them. <Bowing down to Saint Jobs> We are healed! 10.4.3 did overwrite and erase all of Micro$oft Orfice, but I'm unsure whether or not this is a feature. Dunno 'bout Airport reception, I have 2GB, works for me. 'Course I'm using a PowerBook 1.5GHz; not upgrading until Rev B. Intels. I think I'll just skip the whole entire, "And there's SMOKE coming out of the screen, everything is broken, nothing works, I h4t3 apPUl!!#@!1!" rev A noise. I do occasionally hafta use the computer to, hmm, what's that word, oh yes: work. God bless us, everyone. Most of all, those of us who use Apple. |

Easy. Got some coffee during the download and then it was a restart.
MOST IMPORTANT: Repair Permissions after the restart - there was a lot more than I have ever had before.

great update, BUT:
the update.... Disables Quartz 2D Extreme—Quartz 2D Extreme is not a supported feature in Tiger, and re-enabling it may lead to video redraw issues or kernel panics. |

Geeeeeeeez, after install, it took a good 12 - 15 minutes before my HDD would stop crunching away at full tilt. Is that spotlight at work? Must be journaling my drive or something. All reading, very little writing.
Other then that, I don't see any significant improvments. As an owner of a Dual 2ghz G5, i hope this is not the last update I will ever see. With the switch to Intel, I guess they will drop support like a crank ho in Jersey. Here is hoping for 10.4 |

PROBLEM SOLVED!
I had Quartz 2D Extreme enabled (from 10.4.2). In 10.4.3 it made the Finder go beserk (everything was drawn incorrectly suddenly) and Safari was very slow. Now I turned it off, I noticed everything is fast again (odd, in 10.4.3 with Quartz2d disabled, it is just as fast as with Quartz2d enabled in 10.4.2!) Ooooh and watch the minimize-window effect...snappy again! |

It was only 56MB for me but everything seems to work fine. What is going on here?

Using a Mac Mini and the machine won't boot after attempted install. First, after completing install, got an error message saying installation failed and to attempt to load from Finder. Did that and now machine starts to load, runs "Loading OS X" and then abruptly goes back to blue screen.
Anyone else experiencing this? Any help would be appreciated. |

Installe fine on this Mac mini - pulled a 56Mb file from Software Update. Not had a chance to check it out properly, but no issues here thus far.
Quick question, when you get info on an app, since when did it list the architecture? Getting info on my apps now tells you it was compiled for PPC. Is that new, or have I just missed it?
Blocksoft - donationware and shareware for OS X.

And no problems whatsoever in 10.4.3 Although my system icons defaulted, so a swift run (and update) of Candybar was called for to get back to sweet World of Aqua. After running Disk Utility to repair permissions, I see what you lot have been talking about. Updates forever leave a trail of those. Would be nice if they were fixed automatically as part of the update procedure... As for the poor fellow with the Linksys wifi router - seriously, I've got an Airport Express running here which I've had since a week after it came out and it "just works", be nice to your Mac and leave your cieling alone! |

I was 56 as well with an 800Mhz G4 iBook.
After startup, I got the whole welcome to Mac OS X deal asking me to register. Weird, I've never had that before. :/ |

56mb on my 1.33ghz PB G4 12"...Weird.
I have another weird problem with keychains now. It asked me if I wanted to convert the pw keychains to the new higher version in every single program that uses a password. It also forgot the keychain pw i entered for Mail 5 times in a row (had to keep re-entering it). I already repaired permissions... Weird problem...seems buggy. |

I'm very much liking this update.
Spotlight, after the first search, is extremely fast. I'll actually use it now and even switch on Applications in it's prefs. Dashboard is faster and they've got rid of the horrible G5 PowerMac background in it's 'dock'. Also seems to be faster at dropping the widgets on the dashboard before the wave starts. The squeeze buttons on the mighty mouse also seem to fire dashboard more reliably. iPhoto5 now no longer beachballs if I switch applications (Yeah! that's been like that since 10.3.9). That's my favourite fix. Safari is even more standards compliant and seems teh snappy Overall it all feels teh snappy and I'm pretty sure it's not placebo. My only minus point goes to not fixing the sync menu icon to launch isync before syncing phones. |
