Unboxing Apple's black 8GB second-gen iPod nano

Due to popular demand, AppleInsider is publishing a series of unpacking photos taken of Apple's top-of-the-line 8GB black iPod nano.

While arguably the sleekest looking of the second-generation iPod nano family due to its black-on-black motif, the 8GB model is otherwise identical in form and function to its lower-capacity cousins.

However, its anodized aluminum enclosure sports more of a matte finish than the candy-colored 4GB models, which tend to radiate a slight metallic sparkle under bright lights.

Also with the 8GB model, Apple uses black injection-molded plastic for the top and base of the player. The Click-Wheel is also black. On all other models, these portions of the player use white plastics.

The second-generation iPod nano continues to ship in somewhat limited quantities. Most Apple retail stores have so far kept their allotment of the new players behind the sales counter.

Retail stores are also refusing to offer educational and other discounts on the players. Similarly, the new nanos do not qualify for any existing Apple rebates.

On Wednesday, AppleInsider also posted high-quality photos of the green 4GB iPod nano.

Well, to be honest I was thinking "man I wish I could get the black one in 4GB", but now I'm convinced the blue or silver is a better choice. Maybe it looks better in person.

If only because it doesn't have the white plastic bits top and bottom that have always seemed a bit off on my mini… they were very thorough making sure all the external bits matched the black, which is a nice touch.

iPod Phone

Has anyone noticed when custom installing iTunes a disabled module for a phone driver?

I know is off the subject but I just wanted to point that out

umm, so who went to all the trouble of doing the SAME set of photos with the BLACK nano that were done YESTERDAY with the GREEN one???

Someone's got too much time on their hands...

edit: yeah, the monolith look is pretty amazing. They just HAD to make it available only the 8GB model, though...

This is for phones like the Motorola ROKR that have iTunes support. It shouldn't be taken to mean there is an iPhone on the way.

see here for the green one turned on. You'll have to scroll a bit, though, and the picture isn't the greatest.

Can you do anything for us about this, Kasper?

For once, I'd like to see. . .

an unboxing of an Apple product being done by a sexy woman who is simultaneously shedding clothing. It would be kind of a nerd-check. At the point where she is about to pop off her bra, if you say, "Wow! Look at those heat sinks!*" <jefffoxworthy>you might be a nerd!</jefffoxworthy>

I believe it's a macro lens. Extremely close to the subject = shallow depth of field. Also called Bokeh.

don't like it

I personally don't like the black (and one "hands-on" review said it shows fingerprints very distinctly). So many people have waited for a higher capacity nano, and now there's only one choice. They should at least offer silver, which was the most popular mini color. How about 2GB and 8GB nanos in silver and black, and 4GB in all colors?

When I use headphones or earbuds I can only listen to lossless formats (I'm used to portable CD players), so 8GB is really a minimum for me.

I'm all for smaller packaging/less fuel to transport. But is all that plastic trash marked for recycling, and commonly (#1 and #2) able to be recycled?

WOW. That is really a nice looking iPod. I'm going to guess this will be the most popular seller this holiday season. The matte black is beautiful.

Ain't it funny how countries we "liberate" promptly descend into crime and civil war-Afghanistan, Iraq, etc. ?
Countries the "violent Islamists" subjugate end up peaceful, crime-free, and self-sustaining-Somalia,Afghanistan pre-U.S.

Amazon indicates November 27 ETA on 8GB nano!

Ordered from Amazon on September 13th, but Amazon indicates delivery ETA of November 27th!

Did this to avoid sales tax and shipping charges, I can always cancel if a similar deal can be had sooner elsewhere.

I kinda thought Amazon would be one of the first to receive product from Apple (after Apple serves itself first of course). But 2 month delay? Gee, do you think Apple wants to maximize their margin (Apple's website + Apple retail stores only locations currently shipping) based on high early demand? Or, perhaps the 2G nano is only available in limited supply at this time (i. e. Apple serves itself first).

Sigh, either way this makes perfect business sense!

Or perhaps Amazon sold out already on initial stock?

BTW, does anyone have any experience with high end earbuds ($100-$500 range), or noise cancelling earbuds, I have a 4GB 1G nano (white, no scratches), and have been thinking of upgrading the included buds for some time now. Of course, I'd like something in black for the 2G nano (might consider something cheaper for the white 1G nano, though).

Thanks in advance.

enlightenment

does anyone want to enlighten me as to what the hell that useless piece of plastic that comes with the ipod nano (read: not the headphones, the usb cable, or the nano itself) is (read: yes, the 'nano itself' part is a joke)? I've had a nano for over a year and I still can't figure it out.

Universal Dock adapter. It allows you to use your existing Universal dock with new lines of iPods, as they come out. Every new ipod except the shuffle comes with one.

Unfortunately, my Universal Dock has a problem where it drops out 2 seconds of sound about every hour or so of playback.

From the Apple Website:

Quote:
The iPod Universal Dock package includes adapters for five iPods. New iPods will include adapters for that model, and other adapters are available separately.

What's in the Box:

iPod Universal Dock
Five Dock Adapters that fit the following iPod models: iPod mini (4GB and 6GB); iPod with click wheel (20GB, 40GB, U2 Special Edition); iPod with color display (20GB, 30GB, 40GB, 60GB, U2 Special Edition)

My problem with the macro shots is that they add NO benefit whatsoever. What point is there to see the headphone jack from half an inch away?

Do you ever go down to your local Apple Store to look at stuff? Hold it up real close and look at it all you want.

Kind of a "duh" moment, but I just realized that the previous form factor was partly limited by the size of a CD. The new one won't fit a CD, so you must download iTunes if you don't have it.

The new clear case seems pretty thick. Someone here compared it to the iPod socks box, but that was very thin folded plastic box, this box looks quite a bit thicker, and it's molded.
