"Lights Camera Apple" invite issued for NAB event [image]

Apple Inc. has started to invite video production professionals and members of the media to a special event at next month's National Association of Broadcasters Conference in Las Vegas.

"Lights Camera [Apple logo]," reads a digital invite distributed by e-mail. "Please join us for a special presentation at NAB in The Venetian Hotel and Casino on Sunday, April 15, at 11:00 a.m."

The Cupertino-based Mac maker is expected to use the gathering to introduce a new version of its its Final Cut Pro video editing software and possibly unleash an Octal-Core Mac Pro workstation that has been sitting idle in its labs ever since development wrapped several months ago.

Apple has used past NAB events to update Final Cut Pro, introduce new notebooks and launch Soundtrack, its professional audio editing software.

Although Apple plans to take over Venetian Ballrooms A through E, seating for the April 15th invitation-only event is said to be extremely limited.

A reception will follow the presentation.

Does this mean we shouldn't expect anything major until the 15th? Nothing today...so that means Apple will go more than 5 months without a hardware update if they don't release something before NAB.

March 27th, April 3rd & 10th are the only Tuesdays before NAB Sunday.

Since it says "Lights, Camera, Apple," maybe this is related to the iTunes movie store. The new Apple TV supports H.264 resolutions up to 720p, but movies bought from iTunes are all 640x480. They upgraded to that from 320x240 at an event sometime late last year, and I remember the invitation was similar to this.

Yeah, it will probably make heavy use of Core Animation as well (like the new iLife suite, etc), so a Leopard official announcement will defeinitely happen. But things could be like Adobe CS3, in that they get annouced in the next few weeks, but with actual release to public shipping dates anywhere between now and June.

If it was just an iTunes Store announcement, that would be the biggest disappointment ever. No, this is pure Final Cut Pro, Octo Macs, and maybe a few "one more things".

I would hope not. The NAB group doesn't care about what apple is doing on the iTMS. They want to know what Apple is going to do for THEM!

I don't think a leopard announcement will definitely happen, mainly because I can't see why FCP would need to have a new UI for Leopard. Does that mean all apps have to be re-UI'd for the new OS? (The original poster questioned the GUI, not the underlying OS interfaces). Plus, why do we need ANOTHER GUI? Can't apple just stick with their UI for more than a year without changing something about it, or screwing things up even worse then they are now?

And just because they may announce it, there's nothing that says it will be released for NAB. It easily could be several months away. Although, knowing Apple, I certainly wouldn't be surprised if they screw their customers over and require leopard for the new version. Nothing like forcing an upgrade on something critical like an OS just so that you can use a new version of some software.

The general consensus is that the new Leopard GUI will fix up all the mess and bring a sleeker, more professional, more unified UI across the board.

Apple is never done tweaking the GUI... there is always something to be done with it to make it better than the last iteration. Plus the new GUI will be res-ind, so a few things will be changed in it for better use with this new tech I would think. Its like the (artist is never done with a painting etc concept..)

Its difficult to say with the UI. But what is very likely is that FCP 6 will directly use new API's in Leopard.

The same happened with FCP 5 and Tiger. You really needed Tiger to make full use of FCP 5. It would work on Panther but all functions of 5 would not work properly.

Although, knowing Apple, I certainly wouldn't be surprised if they screw their customers over and require leopard for the new version. Nothing like forcing an upgrade on something critical like an OS just so that you can use a new version of some software.

This probably will be the case. As FCP 6 will likely use new technology in Leopard. If this is screwing the customer what do you suggest? That Apple does not upgrade FCP? Or that Apple updates Tiger with Leopards new technology?

If the announcement is going to put a lot of emphasis on HD, I could see Apple including an announcement of HD content in iTunes -- particularly since Apple TV just shipped and can apparently handle such content.

I'm really surprised that The Beatles catalog has not yet been announced. It's been more than a month since Apple and Apple Corp. announced the settlement and new licensing deal. Maybe we're going to get an iTunes content announcement/event soon for Apple to announce:

* The Beatles catalog,
* Warner Brothers catalog films, and
* select films and TV shows in HD.

And since Thom Yorke is already in the fold, I'd love to see the Radiohead catalog and a new EP.

I wonder if they will keep the current design or a new completely new design for Mac pro and Displays.

I don't expect Leopard to be announce at NAB, but I am pretty sure the MacPro will only ship when Leopard is here. So, is either we have Leopard announce it right after NAB or MacPro will ship close to WWDC or maybe a bit earlier

It is not uncommon to expect pros who would be in the market of buying such software as Aperture and Final Cut Studio to upgrade to the latest operating system.

And Apple wouldn't have to announce anything about Leopard at this event. All they have to say is..."Final Cut Pro 6...shipping by June."

It's obvious Leopard will be ready by June.

June is going to be a big month for Apple computers.

I'm looking forward so forward to a new FCP. Maybe if they do announce final cut extreme they'll drop the price on the original suite, that'd be awesome.

I expect the suite to also be divided up app wise like it was before so those of you that want to buy only 1 program can.

I think Apple will announce 10.5 before NAB, and FCP 6 will run on Leopard at NAB. The same way they did with FCP 5 and Tiger back in 2005.

I don't believe the FC Extreme and 4K rumors. 4K is prohibitively expensive. Even for multimillion dollar Hollywood films. The only Hollywood films that indulge in 4K have budgets north of $100 million.

I can believe FCP will work with 2K. Which still a lot of data and expensive to deal with.

Sorry, I could buy that except the part where you say "make it better". They don't always make it better. Half the times they make it different for the sake of making it different. A couple of examples:

• Removal of the toolbar in the system preferences, for no reason at all.
• Columns view is still relatively useless with little degree of control on how things work.
• In list view, they removed the 'left-right' cursor to resize columns, which means you literally have to guess where to click to resize those columns. Guess wrong and you've just moved the entire column around.
• They still can't seem to come up with a way to set up a display for folders in list view for all folders, and have it stick (esp. changing column widths, turning on 'calculate sizes', etc).
• Kind of off-topic, but since I'm ranting: What's the deal with making read me files that are actually applications?

On top of that, then they go around and break their UI themselves. I don't care about certain specific apps that need to have things different because of what they do (say iMovie), although Garageband has some elements that are completely wrong, and why exactly does Mail have a different appearance than every other app?. Could they not wait to do that UI overall in Leopard, or do it in all apps in Tiger. But just in one app is just plain not caring. iTunes has items in the pop-up menus that don't appear anywhere else.

And I don't think resolution-independence has been an announced feature of Leopard, has it?

Just because they show does not mean it will go on sale right away. I doubt the will show FCP 6 running on Tiger.

Doing all of this is far more complicated than the rabid fans of Red think it is. Capturing 4K on the camera is only one part of the process and probably the easiest. Most high end post houses with millions of dollars worth of equipment currently work in 2K. There are only a couple of high end post houses that are even set up to work with 4K. They had to spend hundreds of thousands to get their equipment up to the task.

Exactly. As I pointed out last year or whenever the big RED announcement came out (and people thought it was all a myth or a hoax) they had a links section, now found under Gear We Use, the first link is Apple.

Tell me, why would they use Apple and not FCP? They have obviously been testing with a new still in beta version of FCP to support their cameras.

Oh, and the lack of mention to Avid further supports my speculation.

Also notice that this camera will not ship till early this year....April is still considered early. They must have been testing these cameras on something that is still in development by Apple otherwise they would be a little more specific with the system requirments but being that they have signd an NDA, they cannot do that.
