News Flash: Apple iPhone receives FCC approval
Apple Inc. on Thursday received the official go-ahead on its first ever mobile handset, as regulators for the Federal Communications Commission gave the iPod maker the green light to commence sales of the device in the United States.
According to FCC documents obtained by AppleInsider, the "GSM Cellular Telephone with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi" carries model number A1203 and FCC ID: BCGA1203. In an SAR Test Report conducted on February 6th, 2007, FCC Test Lab Manager Lothar Schmidt wrote the following: "The Apple Inc. A1203 GSM Cellular Telephone with Bluetooth and Wifi, FCC ID: BCGA1203, is in compliance with the limits for general population uncontrolled exposure specified in FCC 2.1093. The device was tested according to the measurement standards and procedures specified in FCC OET Bulletin 65, Supplement C (Edition 01-01) and IEEE p1528/D1.2, April 21, 2003." Per Apple's request, the test report omitted the following for "short term" confidentiality reasons: Test Setup Photos, External Photographs, Internal Photographs, and the iPhone User Manual. Permanent confidentiality omissions included the iPhone's Block Diagram, Operational Description, Radio Schematic, Radio Bill of Material, Radio Tune-up Procedure, and Exhibit notes. Apple has maintained that it is on track to begin shipping iPhone in late June. Shares of Apple rose nearly 2 percent on the news to close up $2.10 to $109.44. For those interested, you can view Apple's requests for confidentiality and some of the test results on the following page. You can also download -- via our mirror -- the 4-part iPhone SAR Test Report (part1, part2, part3, part4). |

Great news
This is great news in that we can now ignore any rumors that the FCC rejected the iPhone that were no doubt going to come any day now. Glad we avoided a web swarm on that one...
It's also nice to know that one more hurdle in the path to actually shipping the iPhone is taken care of. ------------------- www.ITFinanceGuy.com |

Obviously, some Apple country subsiduaries have yet to submit to their respective governming bodies awaiting for the US FCC's approval first. Some countries may just rubber stamp the US rulings. In either case, "Who?" Nobody that is in the know will tell you. So why even speculate. In any event, this is great news for the millions of us that are just biting the bullet to get it. Blah...
Anyone else sick of the iphone yet? Hasn't even come out yet and I'm bored. Liked it better when apple would suprise me with new, innovative things I could actually use. Too much consumer junk nowdays and quality control has taken a bit of a dive. I'll keep buying though...

Compared to any phone I've owned, the iPhone appears to be an innovative thing I can actually use. Maybe you mean to say, "When apple would surprise me with things I could actually afford". ![]() Last edited by McHuman; 05-17-2007 at 03:01 PM.. |

I'm not sure if you're joking, but just in case: June 11th was never even hinted at by Apple. First they said "in June" then they clarified "late June". June 11th was speculated by some, given the opportunity to intro the device during WWDC keynote--as if it really needed a lot more keynote time.

The camera is in the same place. Final approval means Apple can now go into full production if the software has been completed. It'll take a month to ramp up production and get sufficient quantities into stores for the launch.
I wonder how many will sell the first day. I also wonder if yesterday's hoax that caused the stock to drop was created by someone who knew about today's FCC approval. There was a spike up today and the difference between yesterday's low and today's high at the moment is over 6 bucks. |

Shucks, I was secretly hoping Apple would announce it had built 3G capabilities into the launch product. So much for that.
Still, I'm really excited to see that things are indeed moving forward. It's been a long, cold, hard winter waiting for this thing... |

I would like to answer you, but my mother would probably roll over in her grave. I have to be careful; my ancestry is made up of from two developed countries, one underdeveloped, one underdeveloped but claims to be highly developed, two races, three nationalities and three religions. My wife family adds a couple of other nationalities as does my son, but only one race and one religion.
Needless to say, I never work, too many holidays. Except that the government forces me to be an atheist in order to put food on the table. Sorry, bubbe. |

And lo, another requirement for armeggedon was struck. And the world did weep.
For the great battle was soon to be fought. With flaming DRM'ed Zunes in the diabolical hands of the hordes, and the iPhones glowing with a technological LED radiant light in the hands of the chosen few. Balmer at one hand, Ive's at the other. And with a gloating confidence did the Gates attack, and the doors of digital distribution were never the same. So saith the words of Job's. Amen. ![]() |

Be careful, it is "champing at the bit."
And thanks guys. Now that my sister-in-law knows, my wife is sure to find out, the pain has already begun. Last edited by Abster2core; 05-17-2007 at 06:01 PM.. |

The only thing that sucks about seeing the frequency data is that we now see that the iPhone is only dual-band GSM set to North American frequencies. Which will be great for traveling around the USA and Canada, but will mean that the iPhone would be a paperweight for anyone who travels to Europe. I'm really surprised at this, given that tri-band and quad-band phones are common.
I don't want to have to pony up the bucks for an iPhone, and then on my next trip to Europe leave the iPhone at home and take along my Motorola...but according to the posted frequencies, that's just what I'll be doing. UPDATE: Okay, maybe I got my shorts in a knot too soon. I'm seeing chatter on other boards about the iPhone being quad-band, but that the FCC only tests North American frequencies -- thus, we only see the dual-band frequencies in the test data. Gavin. |

Champ is merely an older form of the word, in fact, that's basically the OED's definition, you have to look up chomp to get the meaning. I've never heard it used outside of the idiom. I think it makes more sense to use the idiom with the newer form, to use words that are actually used.

Wait, so you're saying that the FCC approved iPhone because of its bit-chomping (or champing) feature?
