Apple's Mac OS X 10.5.4 to fix nagging shutdown glitch
The next maintenance update to Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard will add support for the company's rebranded suite of internet services but also patch over a dozen other bugs that have withstood earlier updates to the operating system.
People familiar with the software say the Mac maker recently provided its vast developer community with a second pre-release build of the impending Mac OS X 10.5.4 Update labeled build 9E12. Among the dozen or so code corrections baked into the latest build were fixes to a bug that would leave some Mac systems hanging on shutdown, and another that prevented applications from being assigned to Spaces via drag-and-drop from the application list. As was the case with earlier updates to Leopard under testing, Apple has requested that developers evaluate the software broadly. Specifically, the company is alleged to have listed nearly two dozen core components that need special attention, including iLife compatibility, printing, networking, AirPort, and common applications such as Mail, iCal, and iChat. Mac OS X 10.5.4 will also be required by Leopard users who wish to utilize the company's just-announced MobileMe service, a collection of online services and software announced at this week's Apple Worldwide Developers Conference as a more capable and advanced replacement for .Mac. As such, the Leopard update, which currently weighs in around 150 megabytes, will be released within the next few weeks, ahead of the July 11 MobileMe launch date. |

Are they ever going to fix the problem with my Mac going into a fritz when waking up from sleep? Very annoying.

Actually there's a very annoying Spaces bug (which I reported) which stops spaces being switched both via the dock icon and via cmd+tab. The only way round it is zoom out by clicking the Spaces icon and go to the space you seek that way. It's most annoying, and it's not a permissions issue, it's definitely a bug. It seems to be a related to iWeb somehow. After publishing and such.
On the subject of iWeb, iWeb never keeps the color palette open between quits and restarts of the app, this can become quite annoying. Having a larger display it's nice to lay out inspectors and color palettes so you never have to bother opening and closing them. You place it off your canvas and it's out of the way to be used when you choose, but when you open the app again it's magically disappeared. Annoying!

Probably the most annoying problem is that of file corruption when saving Photoshop files to a server.

HAH!
I finally have an issue that matches up with a point release. For some reason, and it's completely random, my iMac will hang on shut down. Granted it generally only happens 1 time out of 100, but I can finally say I have a problem that's being fixed (outside of the weird samsung HDD problem a while back). |

My original-series PowerMac G5 2.0 does this, too. It also occasionally has a blank screen on boot afterwards. I'm increasingly of the opinion that this might be a hardware problem with the graphics card, since the hard disk sounds like it's spinning up correctly...

Maybe Apple can also fix the case of disappearing RSS feeds in Mail, as well as glitches in synching documents to .Mac iDisk.

My PowerMac G5 is suffering from various issues since it was upgraded to Leopard. I notice it more once I started using Time Capsule:
- hangs on shut down from time to time - when it wakes from sleep, it looses connectivity with the Internet - Applications become unresponsive frequently Overall, it's annoying. I don't have these issues on my MacBook Pro. |

BTW: I have on occasion received inDesign files that were corrupted and 'save as' doesn't fix them. I solved that problem by copying and pasting into a new document. If it is one particular document that you are having problems with that may explain the issue. Last edited by mstone; 06-13-2008 at 04:39 PM.. Reason: added BTW |

Photoshop & Spaces
How about also fixing the bug that causes the flashing cursor in Photoshop after switching Spaces? Every time a new update comes out, I'm hopeful that it has the fix, but the problem still persists in 10.5.3 for me and countless others.

Airport Problems
Apple needs to fix the problems with airport. Until that happens my Mac notebooks are essentially bricks. What use is a notebook if it refuses to connect to about half of the networks that it encounters?

I'm on a 12" PB clean installed Leopard a number of times and always the same problem, the Adobe forum is full of people with similar problems, I suspect it has something to do with the finder as that's when the app crashes generally going to the finder to save or load something. Also <CMD-H> does not hide the app. |

I hope you are logging your issues with Apple. Posting here is find for a quick vent and perhaps find a workaround but letting Apple know directly will help ensure that it will eventually be resolved.

Works with 10.4.11, too. I'm guessing there will be a MobileMe install option for those wishing to connect with Tiger, but Leopard will have it built into the point update.

will it not work with Tiger either?? WTF happened to think different, or is this the "different" now-a-days? or is this just poorly worded AI.. erm I mean badly copy and pasted AI speak.
I don't see how an anti M$ stance can be seen as a bad thing on an Apple forum I really can't!

No Sleep
I got this nagging issue where I get on my MBP and get no sleep at night. Any chance 10.5.4 will come with a 4 pack of Guinness?

I have talked to Apple several times about the the airport problems, and I have always been told that the firmware in the router needs to be updated. They never bother to say how I am supposed to update the firmware in the wireless routers at Starbucks, or elsewhere where I do not have physical control over the router. No, the problem is with Leopard, and Apple needs to accept that and fix it. Leaving a critical issue like this unsolved since last October demonstrates tremendous contempt for their customers.

I've always had sleep/wake issue with all my power/macbooks.
I use the screen lock so I get the double log in all the time. I get some active window under the log in window (i assume) where the keyboard input is going into something other than the log in dialog box. When those things happen I often get the very hard to wake notebook. |

I hope they finally fix the keyboard issue where it misses out the first letter of anything typed if my macbook hasn't been used for a while. This was supposedly fixed in one update but then got broke again in the next one.

I could connect to my Belkin Router under Tiger but once I upgraded to Leopard it ceased to work. It turned out I needed an experimental ROM flash upgrade from Belkin before it would work with my Macbook.

It did not occur to me to try and change the channel, but that will only help if I have physical control of the router. It will not help me in a coffee shop, or at a business meeting. Still, it is worth trying it a a friend's and seeing if it helps. This problem is fundamentally odd because it only happens on certain networks, and it is repeatable. I suspect that what is happening is that Leopard is unable to talk to some routers, perhaps because of a discrepancy between the way that Apple implements 802.11n and the way that various router makers implement it. Or perhaps it is a problem with interoperability between 802.11n and 802.11g. Either way, Apple should be trying to resolve this and not simply telling me to upgrade other people's hardware. In general I have had very good experiences with Apple hardware and software, but this is really souring me on Apple. |

That is fine if you own the router, but what happens if someone encounters this problem in a hotel, or in a cafe, or at a friend's house, or in class? The problem is ultimately with Leopard, so Apple needs to stop pretending that it is not.

Oh I agree. I shouldn't have had to do any kind of flash upgrade, it should have worked anyhow.

Desktop Click..... No Finder after startup!!!!!!
Since 10.5.3 download When the system is restarted if I click on the desktop I can't get to the finder.
The only fix I can find is Option/Command Escape and click on finder. After I do that one time, I am OK. |

There have been issues with networking since the Tiger .10 release. I think they just carried over the bad code to Leopard as we saw no changes when we migrated two systems to Leopard. If you don't use security on our router, then you probably don't have a problem. We had to stop using WPA as it would not work. In our case WEP works with the Netgear router, but it is a less secure system. This has been a big enough issue that the City of New York schools suspended deliveries of Apple computers. If Microsoft had had these problems, they would have been on the front page of every newspaper. It is a shame that the technology columnists let Apple get away with this stuff.
