iPhone App Store downloads top 10 million in first weekend

In addition to selling more than 1 million of its new iPhone 3G handsets since Friday, Apple announced that iPhone and iPod touch users also downloaded more than 10 million applications from the the company's new App Store during the same three-day period.

"The App Store is a grand slam, with a staggering 10 million applications downloaded in just three days,” said Apple chief executive Steve Jobs. "Developers have created some extraordinary applications, and the App Store can wirelessly deliver them to every iPhone and iPod touch user instantly.”

Having launched with just over 500 native iPhone and iPod touch-ready applications, Apple now says the number of apps available for download has swelled to more than 800. Over 200 of those applications are available for free and more than 90 percent remain priced at less than $10.

Many of these new applications take advantage of iPhone’s large display, Multi-Touch user interface, fast hardware-accelerated 3D graphics, built-in accelerometer and location-based technology.

The App Store on iPhone works over cellular networks and Wi-Fi, which means it is accessible from just about anywhere, so users can purchase and download applications wirelessly and start using them instantly.

Applications are free or charged to the user’s iTunes account and the App Store notifies the user when updates are available for their apps. Customers can also shop the App Store from iTunes running on a Mac or PC, which syncs applications to the iPhone or iPod touch using a USB cable.

They will miss my $ lol, I cannot update my credit card at the Apple web site. My dot Mac/MobileMe family membership expires in 36 hours and I keep "server errors please try again later" messages (sound familiar?). Phoning is useless as i am told there is no way to pay over the phone and someone will contact me within 48 hours. Here is hoping ...

I've owned an iPhone for less than 48 hours and I've already received two spam SMS text messages from Loopt...what's up with that? Both times the number it came from was 56678.

Mind you, I have never had this App on my phone, or ever singed up for anything related to Loopt. And they definitely don't have my permission to spam me with text messages! In fact, the only contact I've had with Loopt is via the iTunes App store.

This needs to stop immediately, as text messages cost money. I'm sure I'm not the only one this is happening to, I wonder if Apple knows about this yet? If they don't, they will soon. If I get another spam text, both Apple and AT&T will be hearing from me.

Is there a way to block specific numbers from texting/calling your phone?

Two thoughts. Add the iPhone number to the 'do not call registry' asap. Also if you contacted Loopt via iTunes store, you may be classed as a willing contact and that means they can call you for up to three months I believe under the do not call rules.

I guess I phrased it wrong before...I didn't actually "contact" Loopt (that I know of). All I did was read the description of the App, and read the comments other people left, that's it. I never left the App store and I didn't install the App itself.

The only I purchased was Super Monkey Ball......which after a few times...pretty lame as well.

On another note...did anyone notice the iPhone 2.0 Calendar application has changed to Monday thru Sunday.Yet iCal on my Mac is still Sunday thru Saturday....this bothers me.

to each their own, i guess. I am very happy with my free apps, Pandora for finding and listening to new music, which is fabulous, Yelp for close by restaurants and bars (with reviews), VoiceNotes for notes while driving, and the free Italian voice phrasebook for my upcoming trip should be helpful. I even like Truveo for searching video sites and watching videos...so many great free apps....so little time..

There's a lot of crap, but there are some gems. I really want to like Monkey Ball but I find it really hard to control. I use Photobucket a lot, so thier app is a boon for me being able to take pictures and upload them. Karajan (free version) I am using to help me understand and learn music.

Super Monkey Ball is difficult but if the controls were easier I think it would be completed in no time. I am on the 2nd island already.
I happen to think they are the perfect balance, very entertaining with a nice dose of torture.

That said... it would be a good idea to add sensitivity controls though so people can play it however they want.
It could challenge you more by stepping up in sensitivity too.

Far too much chaff at the App Store. I hope that a number of businesses will develop free apps as a way to drive brand loyalty and/or website traffic. ESPN, Individual sports teams, AI(?), news outlets, amazon, etc. Should be lots of them within a few months.

Searching for apps is going to rapidly become VERY cumbersome. The page view in a category in iTunes offers no summary of the app; only the name, price, icon, and release date. Very poor UI. Take away the multiple categories that so many apps have and the offering actually looks pretty slim.

The good thing is that lots of reviews are calling out the bad apps.

No idea on the blocking, but the texts are probably coming from people adding you their Loopt list, Loopt will send you a text asking you if you want to transmit your location to them. Might be better for them to send you an email as it would cost much less, or offer you the option of opting out in the future.

Sure, there are a lot of apps that I won't be spending my money on, but there are several nice ones. I you go into a bookstore, how many books will you leave with? A handful out of thousands. Same at the app store, I'm sure.

More apps are trickling out, with a really nice seeming new one that allows mindmapping, cut and paste, etc.

The developers had three months to get these apps ready; how many of us can put together a top-notch product in that time? I create teaching materials and my development time is a minimum of 3 to 4 months, usually 6 or more. A lot of these developers did amazing work in a short time; some intend on upgrading their products soon, too (I contacted two about some features I would like to see before buying and they said they were coming within a month or two).

Give it a chance; they will get even better.

A year from now their will be 20 or so 'must have' apps. The rest will be games, books and second rate apps. Nevertheless, that'll be better than anything else available on the other mobile platforms, IMO.

There's only so much you'll be able to do on any hand held device.

Of all the apps available for the Mac (or PC, whichever you use), how many have you actually bought? I've bough quite a few over the years, but I have stuck with the good ones, which is a rather small number.

There is a lot of potential in hand-held devices, and we are just witnessing the beginning.

Sounds like you may have an app in mind that is better. Create one and sell it... we'll see how you make out.

I am using v2.0 build 5A347 and the calendar days are Sunday—Saturday, but I see no option to change it under Settings.

woah...thats weird...I have 2.0 build 54A347 as well...but mine has Mon - Sun...left to right.

Not sure if this is proper terminology, but if you press the center "Home" button and the top "Sleep" button simultaneously you can do a screen capture on your iPhone. It then puts the photo in your Camera Roll.

Just create a Flickr or PhotoBucket account. I suggest using your AI screen name specifically for posting images when using your AI alias across forums. Both are available for purchase as apps, but I think photos can easily be uploaded using mSafari or at teh very least you can can email the pic and then upload it.

Sol here is a screenshot of my 1st gen V 2.0 iPhone Calendar....

Since you are using the vBulletin IMG tag, you don't need the HTML tags you are adding. In fact, you can't use HTML tags on this forum. Only put the URL between the IMG tags.

Also, you can edit your posts so making new posts to correct errors is not necessary, and typically frowned upon.

PS: Your 3rd and 4th attempt didn't work because those links are still pointing to regular pages, not the image file. You can see it you right clicking on the little question mark icon and opening in another window. I know it ends with a .JPG, but the '? in the address field means it's a GET query (at least I think it is). EIther way, you have to right click on the image itself and choose Copy Image Address. That will open the image up in it's own window.

I have deleted quite a few free apps since they pretty much suck. BoxOffice is much better than Movies. 'Where' pretty much sucks, it is slow even over Wi-Fi. WeatherBug beats Apple's Weather app. And the BEST free app has to be REMOTE! Because of that app, I bought an AirPort Express off eBay so I can connect it to my home stereo and remote control iTunes from the iPhone! I can also use it in the backyard with my JBL Spot Speakers and control iTunes with the iPhone! How cool is that?

So there are some good apps, and there are some that are stinkers. Goes with the territory.

OK, so I am new to the whole iPhone experience. But I must admit that I am rather amazed that DataViz or someone else has not provided a way to view Office or other docs directly in the iPhone.

Am I missing something?

So there are some good apps, and there are some that are stinkers. Goes with the territory.

— BoxOffice is nice. The Rotten Tomatoes ratings are a nice touch, too. Movies has a major flaw in that you have to exit the app after putting in your zip code and then reenter it again. There is no enter or okay button there. How did that make it to the App Store? And here I was defending Apple for their QA.

— Weather Bug is great, but I personally never concern myself with the weather, but I know people so obsessed with it that I think They'd buy an iPhone if they saw that one app.

— For free apps, the Talking <language> Phrasebooks are nice. Easy to access phrases with voices.

— VoiceNotes is nice for voice notes. It's not refined at all but it was effective when testing.

— NetNewsWire is a popular app on OS X, but it's too bulky for my needs. I prefer a simple Menubar icon for my RSS. But for the iPhone it's the nicest RSS reader I've seen though I haven't tried the Google app yet.

— Some apps are simple but could prove to be useful are Light, which makes the entire screen white for a makeshift flashlight, of course. There are a few, but they charge money, which I find ridiculous since this app would take me 5 minutes from start to finish, and I'm a really bad coder!

— One app I figured I'd delete right away is Dial Zero, but I'm keeping it. It's like a simplified yellow pages with toll free numbers and web-address for all the major companies. I couldn't less about what buttons to push to get a live operator right now, but I may care when stuck trying to find my way around their automated directory like some keypad-based version of Advent.

— I wish I could remove Contacts. Pressing Phone to get to my contacts never bothered me.

— iPint is lame, but I like how the display fills up like a beer and then uses the accelerometer so you can pretend to drink it. The effect is pretty realistic.

— Loopt is nice, I will be using that to find and be found when traveling with friends and family. The GPS tracking could have come in handy at a crowded outdoor concert earlier this year. I do wish they'd allow for updates via email and not just SMS.

— AIM is worse than Meebo since the App Store Push service hasn't been enabled. It also needs some bug fixes and major refinement. I figured they would have this complete they have had access to the SDK longer than most and have experience with OS X.

— Just checked out Mobile News Network. Both it and NYTimes are nice apps, but I prefer the former as it loads much faster.

PS: My Safari has been crashing a lot.
PPS: Jobs, NYTimes and Mobile News Network have just put badges on my device as to updates. Not the apps that really need the most, but it's good to see.

I like remote a lot, but I really wish I could stream the music from my own phone to airport speakers, not just controlling an itunes library. I'm sure it's doable...

On some carriers, replying to a spam message with the word STOP works.

I would inquire from your mobile provider to see if that works on their system.

It can be of benefit as more and more spammers start to use text messaging for spamming.

yes both are using safari.
but it doens't take long to fire it up...on the 3g right??? (that's what i did when i played around with my friends 2g iphone)
time will filter out the weak and strong apps

and i bet the reason we don't have a point to point and text to speech nav program. is apple is working with the major players to get a piece of the action or maybe att is blocking it.
tomtom and garmin may be blocking it some way....to keep there stand alone units from sales meltdown.

when it does come it will be another defining app for the iphone. i thought the increased data rate to 30 was to be an end run to pay for the added nav functionality, since many phones have it but people pay extra.

also nav won't be $9.99 it will be something like $40+ and may require yearly upgrades...at a price. the handheld market sweats bullets over the iphone and nav
