More proof of Nehalem Xserves; may ship with OS X 10.5.7

Following up on our report this morning regarding the impending release of Nehalem-based Xserves, a reader has turned up hard evidence of the new rack-mount systems in pre-release builds of Mac OS X 10.5.7.

In particular, AppleInsider reader Adam has discovered references to an "Xserve 3,1" inside the AppleTyMCEDriver extension file currently seeding to Mac OS X developers as part of Mac OS X 10.5.7.

The current incarnation of the Xserve, introduced in January of 2008, has long identified itself as "Xserve 2,1" (screenshot), meaning "Xserve 3,1" stands as an machine ID indentifier for an unreleased family of Xserves -- almost certainly the upcoming Nehalem models.

In fact, the same text string -- extracted from the extension's data resource -- also includes references to Nehalem error messages:

AppleTyMCEDriver-nehalem_error_disable %s disables the AppleTyMCEDriver MacPro4,1 Xserve3,1.



Additionally, Adam also discovered several references to Marvell's Yukon 2 Ethernet controller chips in a recently modified version of the IONetworkingFamily extension files included with Mac OS X 10.5.7 distributions.



While these particular controller chips aren't new to the market, they would be new to the Xserve line -- the only Apple system suited to adopt such chips.

With new Xserves expected as early as the next two weeks, it's possible the new systems will ship with Mac OS X 10.5.7, which is similarly expected for a release sometime in April.

With all the work apple puts into an os and all the lack of features for Snow, doesn't it seem like 10.7 is rushed???

I believe that win 7 will be bug but at the same time and for the first time, I think Apple will start to focus on enterprise. Whoot whoot.

Looking forward to FCP 3, Logic (time stretch please), and FCP server 3

I think even if Apple does start another foray into the server or enterprise market it will not be taken seriously, because Apple was never able to take that market seriously enough. We had hoped with the return of SJ, the introduction of OS X Server, and the seemingly long-term focus on the enterprise and server markets, that things would be different now; however time has shown that it wasn't any different. Apple's spark for that market has once again fizzled leaving many of us scratching their heads.

For Apple to be taken seriously again in any high-level IT market, they need to sustain reliability, dependability, support, heavy beta testing, and quick bug fixes.
