Apple releases Mac OS X 10.5.7, Safari 3.2.3 & 4.0 beta update

Apple on Tuesday released Mac OS X 10.5.7, a recommended update for all Mac OS X 10.5.x Leopard users that includes general operating system fixes that enhance the stability, compatibility and security of Macs. Separately, the company released Safari 3.2.3, an update to Safari 4.0 beta and security updates for Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger.

Mac OS X 10.5.7
The Mac OS X 10.5.7 client software is available as a 442MB delta download for Macs running Mac OS X 10.5.6 and as a 729MB combo update for Macs running earlier versions of the Leopard operating system. A list of specific enhancements included in the release follows:

Mac OS X Server 10.5.7
Mac OS X Server 10.5.7 is available as a 452MB download for servers running 10.5.6 Server and a 951MB download for those running earlier versions of Leopard server. A specific list of enhancements is available here.

Safari 4.0 beta 1 (second update)
Readers will recall that Safari 4.0 beta 1 failed to function with betas of Mac OS X 10.5.7 while it was under development. Therefore Apple has quietly updated its Safari 4.0 public beta with a new version supporting -- as well as requiring -- Mac OS X 10.5.7.

The new beta also addresses 3 security issues with the Safari 4.0 beta 1, including vulnerabilities with the browser's URL input validation, a heap buffer overflow problem with libxml, and a memory corruption issue in WebKit's handling
of SVGList objects.

Safari 3.2.3
Separately, Apple on Tuesday also released Safari 3.2.3, which addresses security issues with the web browser. The update is available as a 40MB download for Mac OS X 10.5.x Leopard, a 26.29MB download for Mac OS X 10.4.x Tiger, and a 19.69 download for Windows XP and Vista.

Tiger Security Updates
For users running Mac OS X 10.4.X Tiger, Apple also released Security Update 2009-002. It's available as a 165MB download for Intel Macs, a 75MB download for PowerPC Macs, and a 203MB download for all Mac OS X Tiger servers.

New updates are also showing up today for Safari Public beta and Safari 3.2.3, as well as a separate security update 2009-002.

After 10.5.6 broke my aluminium iMac (freezes related to Firewire drivers and an external HDD even when it was powered off), I think I'll wait a week or two and see if any problems are reported.

Good to see the update arrive though, I guess they're aiming to really finish off the last of the remaining Leopard issues with this release.

If you go to the Safari 4 download page, the system requirements have changed. Looks like it now works with the 10.5.7 update!

There was never any issue with running safari 4 on the beta, it was just installing that was the problem.

It's just something around 220 MB for me. The lag when opening multiple tabs within Safari 4 seems to have gone, but I've only installed 10.5.7 for just a few minutes.

Anyone else experience a bug in 10.5.6 whereby if you click the down scroll arrow it 'runs away' and scrolls uncontrollably all the way to the bottom?

Doesnt seem to be tied to any particular app

No, but I hope that the over-sensitive trackpad on unibody MB/MBPs is fixed. Most noticeable in Safari 4 when it zooms the page in and out excessively.

Mine is done no problems yet, 2.16 macbook and it was the 286 meg... i was running 10.5.6

Hmmm, 286 MB update was saying it would take 4 hours to download (that would normally take about 5 minutes for me)!
Then I got a Mac OS X Update Error. It said the the certificate had changed and that the file may have been tampered with.

It's quicker to download the combo update than go via software update at the moment. As long as you don't mind dling an extra 300MB you might not need...

I'm getting the combo at 1.1MB/s with 9 min remaining as opposed to 4hrs via software update

Me too. Downloaded the 700+ MB combo at about 2.6mbps whereas the software update was about 280mb but was going to take 10 hours.

Yeah Its fine. I had to switch to 802.11n ONLY setting I got a Netgear Print Server I' was using is causing interference until Apple release the 2TB Time Capsules I need two of them. Update is fine I got a 2009 Mac mini Intel Core Duo 2 , 2GHz with 4GB DDR3 and 320GB HD. Its fine that I can tell.

For those complaining of excruciatingly-slow downloads through software update, you're RIGHT!

Even though the delta downloader is twice the size from Apple's downloads site, it's going enough faster to be a better bet. 14 minutes quoted time for me as opposed to 3 hours for the half-as-big SU version..

I'm not able to download the update, as I get an error message about 2MB into the DL about a corrupted digital signature and the fact that it can't be saved. I have 10.5.6 that has been running fine with no problems so far. I was also getting a reported 4-7 hours DL time after having gone through software update. Should I contact Apple customer support on this issue?

About time on the converter widget, probably the buggiest thing I've ever seen apple release. Just bizarre results like 1 euro equals .134 euros. How could they let it out the door with such wacky behavior?

I've experienced that exact thing in Safari 4 beta, running on a PC using Windows XP. And it can scroll uncontrollably down or up. But it only happens sometimes, and only on some pages.

But it has never happened on my MBP, in any app.
