iPhone Backup Question

hello--



ive got an iphone 3G, just updated to 3.1.3. I did a full backup prior to restoring.



I was under the impression that the iPhone backs up text/SMS messages. However, when I did a restore, none of the messages showed up, even though my contacts did. Also, all my icons are in arranged in the default arrangement--I thought restoring a backup also restored that as well. also none of my recent calls were restored, old contacts i deleted were added, among other issues. Any thoughts or ideas?

    looks as though for some reason itunes wrote over today's earlier backup that had my texts in it. but the initial backup and restore did not restore that information. and i have no idea why.



    im still very much curious as to why the app icons are being restored to default positions and why long-ago deleted contacts are reappearing. just found out my contacts were NOT restored in the restore process. only after syncing. help anyone?
