This can't be the first time someone has robbed an Apple store. Maybe they need to start keeping their computers in a vault.

Excellent,

People pirate M$ because its grossly over-priced software.

It only seems right that they should pirate Mac hardware, given its grossly overpriced state.

Is the sarcasm thick enough? Should I add a ?

This is ****ing crazy! Obviously these were big anti-mac people....because mac people would not do it......

In the future, religions will be replaced or augmented by what platform you use and there will be hate crimes agaisnt those people, yet, not as violent or terrible, just, as in this case, destruction of property

Of course, and they probably track stolen serials too, so when these do find themselves resold they will be found upon registration.

But still, this kind opens the door to copy cats. Weird, I don't remember seeing security cams in tha stores I've been to, but they surely have them...

That is a good idea, Eugene. That is the best way to track 'em. Also, they can edit their security tapes to get the stuff they need using iMovie for a quick release to the cops. ....

imagine at the end of the security tape, fade to white and the apple logo :apple.com/retail

I went to the Apple SoHo store at around 1 PM on sunday, I saw that it was closed, and empty...with cops inside. Outside the store, there was a crowd with the store employees. When I asked one of the employees, she told me that earlier it was burglarized. (no more details). It was very odd. It was very weird, very surreal. Outside, the employees were handing out flyers for Jaguar and doing "demos" for the iPod. The store itself seemed fine and intact and at 4, it finally opened.

serendipity perhaps? new ad slogans may result:

"our computers are so hot, if you don't buy one now, it may be gone by tomorrow."

"when's the last time somebody cleaned out a Dell/Gateway store"

"quarterly os 9 sales up 8%, os X up 21%, thefts up 85%"

"we move more computers than we can sell"

discerning criminals switch to apple...
"i'm jah bozo, felon - new Tibook 'owner'

nah, apple more cynical than big apple?

I guess all Apple Stores have a plan to do something when they do not have power or the ability to be inside the store.IE: Show off portables and hand out flyers

Not so sure about that. Mac people know the expense of a Powerbook and would love to get one for cheap (or in this case, free).

I could easily be a Mac person who wants one for themselves and to also sell them to others.

I've been in the Apple SoHo store about five times in the past few weeks. It sucks that it was burglarized. But look on the bright side: First of all, the location ROCKS. It is in the heart of one of the best shopping areas in the WORLD and brings tremendous brand recognition and "cool" factor for Apple. Second, the store has been packed with people every time I've gone. Apple is "strutting their stuff," and that kind of flashy display is bound to attract people looking to get something for nothing. Please don't trash all "New Yorkers" because of this. This city has the good and the bad just like everywhere else. Yes, there is crime, but where else can you get vegetarian Korean food at midnight, or delivery of Falafels at three in the morning?

As for the theft at SoHo, my top suspects are as follows:

1. Conspiracy Theory: The people behind the people that run the government (you know, the ones that fixed the 2000 presidential election and cryogenically sealed Elvis and Walt Disney in a stasis machine?) did it because Microsoft paid them big money to lay off the antitrust suit (even though Microsoft should have LOST the lawsuit Apple brought against them years ago for COPYING the pull-down menu system).

2. The terror theory. Unnamed operatives in the war against terrorism appropriated the ipods for use in the fight against al quaeda. One such operative is alleged to have said, "hey, 4000 songs in my ammo-pack, that's a heckuvalotta music, and I thinkk my AK-47 assault rifle is Firewire compatible."

3. The Bug theory. Steve Jobs found an undisclosed bug in the firmware and is trying to secretly collect all the impacted hardware without making a press release. He was last spotted headed for San Francisco muttering something that sounded like, "those Motorolla Motherf#$%#$%"

Which one do you think it is?

I think it sucks that the store got robbed, but I agree with you. It really doesn't matter. This isn't the first time a retail store's gotten robbed ever.

One guy said the glass bridge was damaged

So what should the punishment be when these thieves are caught (if ever, and assuming cruel and unusual is suspended)?
I vote to tie a PC to the guy's (gal's?) left nut (ovary?) and drop the PC off, hmmm, the Statue of Liberty. Major pain.

i concur. but not with attaching the peecee to the left nut. i think the male participant(s) should be given `switcher sergery`, to convert them to femail. just so we can attach something to their fvcking ovaries and drop it off the symbol of undying Freedom & Libertad. [and any1 who tinks `switcher sergery` doesn't involve adding ovaries obviously hasn't had `switcher sergery`; mmm, tastes like excavated bile]

I fear this is the first sign of the Great .mac Riots of 2002.

I just saw helicopter footage of a mob of 250 geeks on their way to Infinite Loop on CNN
