Bobby Fischer arrested.....
....in Japan.
BBC link. I was always a big fan - one of the greatest players ever imo although Go is more my game than chess. Knew he had disappeared but didn't realise there was a warrant out. Recently there were rumours that he was playing several (all time classic) games on the net under an alias. No-one knew for sure it was him but it was someone with a very similar style. Sad really. Guess he just couldn't handle it.
Wanted: new sig. Applications invited by posting ridiculously lame wingnut comments in this thread.

I agree, this man obviously wants nothing more than to be left alone and is being arrested largely due to his famous chess play.

Looks like he is being used as a pawn in an international game.

This is terrible. prosecuted for having playing chess 12 years ago. Which prosecutor will be ridicule enough to charge him ?
I am ready to sign a petition to free him. The cold war chess propaganda have cease with the fall of the Berlin's wall. |

Good to see our resources being spent on prosecuting truly important criminal activity. Go get 'em Ashcroft!

Wrong, he should be prosecuted. He violated an Executive Order "Executive Order 12810". he can't merely be forgotten.
And no, he doesn't only want to be left alone, he spends his time travelling and spouting incredibly absurd and hateful anti-jewish and anti-American broadcasts on any radio that will have him . . . he is a very big celebrity who is also a seriously disturbed nutcase who loves more than anything to spread his views through any means. here is a very good Biographical article: Fischer's Pathetic Endgame

He is clearly using his position in the Chess community to stir up anti-American sentiment. There is rumor he was in Japan to meet that Japanese subway terrorist guy. Never can be too careful in Bush's brave new world! I mean really, don't you feel safer now knowing this guy who willfully disobeyed his government to play chess, is now going to pay for his crimes? I'm sure he'll be in custody at Guantanamo before the month is over...

He was sending hidden messages to terror cells with his online chess games.

In one part I said he should be arrested for breaking the law . . .a law given through direct Executive order. If he felt that the law was unjust then he could have attempted to do something about it through legal means, but he didn't. Then, in a completely different paragraph, I responded to the idea that he is merely a nice guy that wants only to be left alone: which is apparently not true. He doesn't want to be left alone, he wants to use forms of media to desseminate his ideas, ideas that are hateful and paranoid This has nothing to do with his arrest. In the course of a trail it will probably be found that he is at least borderline schizo/paranoid and might actually find some relief through therapy as well as avoid hard jail time. This (in a completely different paragraph) also has nothing to do with 'fascism' except insofar as he admires Hitler's 'ability to force his will on the world'

In case I have to spell it out for you, he's mentally ill. The guy is paranoid schizo, which is kinda ironic, given that the US gov't is out to get him.
