Just read this arstechnica article and in the article it says "He told reporters that competitors wanted to "castrate" the new operating system, which begs the obvious question: if Vista gets castrated, does it just become one of many UNIX?"

So, was this a re-write from scratch using UNIX as the foundation?

    Some editions of Vista do, however, ship with a Unix personality. But the system itself is still NT.
