How does an air compressor work?

How do those things work? I guess they can generate the pressure with a piston, or screw, etc... but how is the pressure regulated to stay constant?

If you had an airtank, I suppose that would cushion the curve of pressure a bit, but wouldn't the output still be pulsating air?

Air is "pushed" into a tank through a one-way valve. In the tank it reaches a pressure higher than the pressure to be output, and then a regulator controls the output PSI.
