Can't wait to hear how it runs. I was wondering how Celerons do with XP.

where did the other 9 GBs go??? XP couldnt have taken it...or is it that big?

ok, first impressions (im writing this from my imac 500 next to the new pc as it doesnt have internet connection yet).
the celeron processors crap, but im pleasantly surprised by XP. it lags down whenever i try and do things other than simply opening a window--it freezes momentarily until the task is complete.
but the system as a whole seems to be more userfriendly since i left the platform (i havent used windows since 98...).
i havent tried much multitasking yet--as im so used to using the dock to switch between things, im kinda forced to do things one at a time til i get used to switching quickly.
WMP seems ok, i guess. its bulky and ugly compared to itunes, and not as easy to use, but its playing a cd perfectly...so i guess its doing what its sposed to for now...

overall, so far, my imac 500 running OS X seems just as fast as this 1.1 celeron w/ XP...
im gonna try to play around w/ it a lil more...
is there anything that i can run in the system to kinda get a better feel of speed? cause so far, its blank, and i dont know what else to run...
think ill spend a lil time on hotline to find some programs fer the parents once i get the network card in so theyre not completely lost...

First thing first should show used spce, free space and actual capacity in the Properties of the drive. That will tellyou what you should have. Then start getting properties on the main folders off of C\. That should give you an idea of where all the drive space is going.

As fars as MP3 is concerned. You can get that functionality with a paid download from MS. <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/windowsxp/experience.asp" target="_blank">http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/windowsxp/experience.asp</a> has the relevant information. (they have a bit of outdated info on iTunes there too)

i cant find anything telling me where the used 9 gigs is going, just that only 24 is available out of 33 in capacity and that the 9 is being used somewhere...
and im not paying money fer something that should be included...thats bullshit--guess its time to download an outside ripper...

Couple more questions...

How much ram? What brand machine? What Video card/ram size?

All this can be causing your slowdowns more than the Celeron. If ram is 128 or less you need more. If the Vid card is not so hot you need to turn down the eye candy. If it is an eMachines you need to have your parents heads examined.

Have you checked Add/Remove programs? What is in there? Also you may have the CD for XP, backups of the software and and image of the machine loaded to the drive (doubt it, but hey, it's possible) Does the machine support hibernation, if so and it is active there is a file the size of you physical ram plus the pagefile (swapfile) that is a bit bigger than actual ram. XP takes about 1.5 GB for a full install. Umm, not sure otherwise. 9GB... <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

ok, heres what i know
it was a very cheap deal, like i said $250 or so, so i didnt expect much from the hardware point of it. its a 1.1 celeron from HP--pavilion home pc (whatever the hell that is). 128 RAM, i know i need to upgrade that part, w/ 11 MB for video memory. on the box, it says its a 40 GB harddrive, so thats all f***ed up if theres only 24 available...
Intel Direct AGP 3D graphics card
oh, and it says something about "PeoplePC." whats that?

its not that slow, but not blazing. its acceptable, and i dont mind letting my parents use it, just for the stability--theyre upgrading from a 98 box

Check and see what kind of crap starts up with Windows at the beginning. I cannot stand how manufacturers put every annoying add-on they can to make it seem like your box is a lot slower than it really is.

Check out the system tray, if you don't need it find a way to get rid of it. Delete everything you don't need from the Startup folder in the Start Menu.

Download CDex or CD-DA Extractor for all your mp3 needs. Also get Morpheus from <a href="http://www.musiccity.com." target="_blank">http://www.musiccity.com.</a>

Also, download StyleXP and visit themexp.org for all you UI customization needs.

Have fun with the new box.

As far as the Video, sounds like shared video ram?
That sucks. Slow way to go and it eats into the ram you really need. Umm, I would go to the control panel and turn of quite a few of the eye candy effects and see if the machine reacts a bit better.

Or to be more precise: <a href="http://www.peoplepc.com/people_packages/bundles_moreinfo.asp?bid=36&slice=36D" target="_blank">http://www.peoplepc.com/people_packages/bundles_moreinfo.asp?bid=36&slice=36D</a>

They paid 250? The price on this site is $965! Sounds like they did alright.

Software
Microsoft Windows XP, Internet Explorer 5.5, Microsoft Works 2001, Microsoft Money 2001, Microsoft Encarta 2001 Encyclopedia Deluxe Online (one-year trial), MusicMatch Jukebox 6.1, Acrobat Readers 5.0, ArcSoft My Photo Center 2.5, and TLC Learning Adventure everything you need to start using your system

Musicmatch should rip CD's for you.
