Patriots/Raiders overturned call

Jeez, what a stupid call. Brady got his left hand back on the ball when he was hit on the side by Charles Woodson. Definitely a fumble..argh.

Gah, both my picks today lost...

The thing about it was, they got it right on the field, then changed it in under the hood. What happened to "conclusive proof" and all that?

Great game, though, even if I do think the Pats are cannon fodder for the Steelers or Ravens, and that Green Bay/St. Louis is basically the Super Bowl.

That call was totally bogus. I was looking forward to a mythic battle of the twp "mean and nasty" (at least that's what they were when I last liked football in my youth) of the STEELERS!!! and the Raiders. Oh well...

I guess it will be the Steelers and GreenBay but I couldn't say who would win.

I was sure it was going to be the Bears vs Rams in the NFC championship...The Bears had been good all season wheras the Eagles' success basically depended on whether McNabb was on or off that day. And McNabb is usually predictable...he usually never rolls out left...

Now it'll be Steelers vs Rams in the Super Bowl...and the Rams are a dome team...the Super Bowl is gunna be in a dome...heck, I bet the Steelers have forgotton how to play on turf now that 3 Rivers is gone...

I'm impressed with Tom Brady. His first year as QB, and he's done an amazing job. Bledsoe gets the season off to a horrible start, gets injured, and this guy walks in and gets the job done.

Not bad for his first playoff game either.

The thing that I don't understand, is that even though the NFL noted for years that MLB playoff games were ridiculously late and shutting the kids out from the games, they go and put games on at 8 PM? It's all about the ratings I guess.

Oh yeah, forgot to talk about the call itself.

Under the rules, any forward motion made by the QB counts as a pass. He clearly made forward motion and therefore, it was an incomplete pass, not a fumble. They made the right call on the review.

Didn't he just touch his left hand with the ball as he was holding up on the throw? I don't know if it was a pass fake, or he just didn't want to risk it with the coverage, but he was definitely not going to throw that ball.

I mean really, any call against the Raiders is wrong.

Seriously though, I think they made the wrong call.

It wasn't even a forward motion at that point. It was a downward motion. I didn't see any eligible receivers at his feet...

And by holding it to his body...his left hand being part of his body, it was no longer a pass attempt or fake pass.

He was not going to throw the ball.

Dude, in the post-game press conference he was laughing the whole time..."Yeah, I was going to pass *snicker laugh*"

He made a pump fake but he had clearly already stopped. His hand wasn't still moving forward when he lost the ball. His left hand didn't touch the ball. That said, I loved the call. I'm not a Patriots fan. I just love the controversy in a big game. And even though they got a gift they still had to make the gift count. The points didn't go up on the board by accident. Brady was huge.

What I really don't understand was why the Raiders took a kneel when they had the ball with 22 seconds and 2 time outs remaining. Why didn't they air it out? There was a good chance they could have still got 2 plays off but they took the kneel. <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

Why risk hurting a man for nothing?
Why risk an interception deep in your own territory where a field goal is possible...the wind was with the Patriots.

The Rams won all of their games on natural grass this season.

The refs got it right, by the book. They invoked the "tuck rule" which states that it's a pass from the time the QB's arm moves in a forward direction, until he tucks the ball away, ... then it's a run. By that rule, it could not be a fumble, it was an incomplete pass.

That said, the rule is bad, and should be changed. They need to draw the line somewhere else, but it can't be at the QB's "intent", because you can't see that.

Furthermore, my two favorite teams are the Denver Broncos, and whoever is playing the Raiders.

For nothing? This was a playoff game. There was no tomorrow. And I suggested that he "air it out" which would have meant a pass deep into the Patriots territory.
